I have the Answer.

Kinja'd!!!

Did a little bit of ice racing at #GRIDLIFE IceBattle this weekend. It was absolutely gorgeous on Saturday, which meant two things: top off, and a lot of slush.

It was in the mid-30s, so it got sloppy at the end of the day. Lots of folks ended up in snowbanks, so we ran until it got dark. Turns out ice racing in the dark is actually fairly terrifying!

My times weren’t great on Saturday, but I won my class (of 4) on Sunday. That means I’ve taken the top spot for 2/3 events in the last week. Not bad!

Bingo. It’s a little sketchy at 70mph+ when lifted, but not too bad. It’s worth it to get silly on the ice!

Looks like fun. I am going to an SCCV Ice Trial on Saturday.

How did you get it so high?

I wish smarts had a viable lift kit like that. :D

Instead, we only have a 2" lift...sads...

It’s a 3" lift kit made by Paco Motorsports. It’s quite simple - just a spacer that bolts onto the bottom of the shocks. Plus, it’s cheap and reversible... why not?!

I also adjusted the coilovers up at least an inch or so... it makes a pretty drastic difference.

Usually it looks like this:

Nice! Have you gone before? You’ll have a blast!

Sadly, this was probably my last weekend for the year. The forecast calls for temperatures near 60°F this weekend, and I doubt it’ll get cold enough to freeze completely again.

Plus, I need to do a timing belt and water pump before I get the Mini out of storage... may as well take the lift off now. :(

I have not done any Ice events yet. It will actually be my first performance driving thing since I got my Cooper. Looking forward to doing a few Ice events and then once I can get my summers on during spring break I am going to run all the autocrosses. You should try to get your Mini on the ice next year.

You’re going to love it! One of the fastest 2WD cars there this weekend was a Civic Si, and I did well last year in the Fiesta. It’s easier to be fast in a FWD car, but it’s easier to have fun (and be slow!) in a RWD car. Seriously, FWD on ice is great - the more you start to slide, the faster you can go.

As for my Mini... I’d love to take it out. I doubt it’ll happen, since most of these events are a couple hours away on 70mph roads. Take a car that hates to go 60mph, couple that with the fact that I’m trying to keep it away from salt... I don’t want to buy a trailer. So we’ll see. Someday the Mini will get on ice, but it might be a few years.

Have you tried any offroading with the Paco kit? I’m thinking along the lines of like rallyx, or semi maintained dirt trails

Better answer, I just completed my second Club Trials of the year on Saturday at Texas World Speedway in College Station. We got up to 80F, so I didn’t wear the free long sleeve shirt they gave out during registration.

Oh, wow! That must be boring!

I love track days, but not as much as I love the ability to do track days, autocross, rallycross, snow rallycross, and ice racing every year. Diversity is the best.

Maybe you just don’t know what you’re missing out on! Ice racing is the most fun out of all of those... and the cheapest by FAR. My total outset for 3 events this year was $120 in registration and a few gallons of gas. There’s no real prep involved and you don’t eat up your tires.

PS, note that I’m driving a convertible during ice racing. You think 80 degrees appeals to me?! Hah!

I think someone did a local rallycross with the Paco Moto kit, but I haven’t given it a shot and don’t plan to. Unfortunately the group that runs nearest me uses a motocross track for half of the course. It’s pretty rough on the car, and I’m still on Bilsteins.

Ice racing isn’t really hard on the car, so I’ve got not issue with that. Rallycross with them is basically a guarantee that you’ll break your car somehow.

Nice, what did you end up going with?

Also, do you post elsewhere from Oppo? Just curious since you seem to do interesting things worth following!

Hah, I’ve been meaning to but I don’t really. Life has been too busy to do interesting things and post about them. I’m taking the rest of the year off from car parts and events, so maybe I’ll pick it up in spring.

Anyway, I went with a Blackbird Fabworx bar and a Corbeau seat for the passenger. The driver’s seat is a Kirkey, but it needs to be replaced and re-mounted. That’ll be a project for next year as well.

Any interesting happenings generally make it to facebook or instagram (wurst case racing or @wurst_case_racing).
