In the daily car bullshit column, I can't trade or sell my SLS to a dealer thanks to Takata

Kinja'd!!!

Mercedes currently lists the SLS as “we don’t know when/if a replacement will be available” in the airbag recall queue.

Which means I can only go private party if I want to move on.

Ugh.

Well that’s horseshit.

What were you hoping to replace it with?

I’m sorry, that sounds like quite a hassle. I guess I’d be willing to do you a favor and take it off of your hands.

Why are you wanting to get rid of, it though?

Why the fuck should that be your problem?

That should be the manufacturer’s problem, if a dealer can’t resell the car.

I’ve got $5 to take it off your hands

That is ridiculous.

Even a MBz dealer? That would be some epically serious BS. “You sold a car you’re afraid even to take back??”

Also, how is Takata even still in business?

That doesn’t make sense. The dealer should be able to take it on a trade, but they couldn’t sell it which I guess would be why you were turned away.

If he’s an SLS guys, maybe an AMG-GTR or that crazy F1 for the street AMG and Mercedes are building

Make a stink. I did so when I was preparing to sell my 135i when there weren’t parts available for the fix yet and the dealership let me know that they would be able to negotiate a trade-in if necessary, including on anything another branded dealership in their network had in inventory.

I imagine you’ve already asked or you will, but it’s worth a shot as I really didn’t have to get particularly uppity to get some decent treatment.

I had a similar problem with a leased BMW on the recall list. Could only return it to the dealer I leased it from, at the end of the lease, not trade it in early to some other dealer.

Tell your dealer you don’t feel safe driving it anymore and you want a loaner until they have a replacement for it.

Looks like private party is the way to go. Hey, I’m a private party, so I’ll buy it from you. But because of the fact I may get killed by the airbag’s exploding shrapnel, I demand a 95% discount. :)

My store has taken them in. I suggest trying other dealers. An SLS is an SLS. Someone will want it.

Are you actually trying to get rid of it?

Yeah, life’s a little different now than when I bought it new 5 years ago. For one, I had the transmission replaced last year under warranty, which was nice because the service bill would have been $30k if it hadn’t been. Since then I’ve talked with other owners and people that deal with them and found transmissions are kind of wear and tear items on these cars. I was extremely lucky to make it 30k miles when mine went. Most of the time they go at 5-10k miles, so I’m trying to avoid a car that can become a paperweight when it decides to eat another transmission for $30k at any moment. Also, I met my wife 2 and a half years ago and now we’re in the new house, child, job, location discussions etc. She understands how much cars mean to me and is willing to let me have one big dumb supercar, but it has to been under warranty, which means just trading every 5 years or so from now on. Leaning towards a new R8 V10 Plus. Really like the new one, it’s one of the only naturally aspirated engines left, and the wife LOVES her new Q7, so Audi is approved. We’ll see. I’m getting the feeling the Takata thing is more an attempt to get me to let the car go for way less than it’s worth.

Totally understand. Was just curious. I suspect you’re right about the airbag thing. I’m annoyed that’s a possibility. I mean come on guys it’s an SLS and it will get fixed at some point. I’ve driven the last gen R8 V10, definitely not bad and I would imagine the new one is an improvement. Whatever makes you happy. But of course, being who I am, I need to suggest driving an AMG GT iteration. Because awesome. Wait, have you driven one? They don’t really feel or sound like turbo engines.
