A second lap to try and find a missing water bottle is what ultimately caused the wreck where I broke my back! Never found the bottle though. And you better believe I was whining about being thirsty for the 10 hours they left me laying in the ER.

Holy crap! Mine was just on my desk because I’m an idiot. After I lost one a few years ago I’ve switched to just re-using those 24 oz. Gatorade bottles with the twist-tops so if I lose one NBD. On anything longer than 6 miles or so I’ll wear a Camelbak.

I highly recommend a backpack / camelpak. You can just take the bottle holder off the bike and have plenty of water. On top of that, I carry a pump and patch kit and usually a spare tube. You can also stick some tools in there like allen wrenches.

Wasn’t fishing for a reaction, if that’s how that came across! I’m just always intrigued by how tiny decisions can snowball. (Also, thumbs up for flat pedals)
I prefer bottles but I like a flip top to cover the mouth part because they get so gross.

Indeed (see my reply to smobgirl). My “real” bike has a hand pump on the frame in the cage mounts (with a velcro strap so it doesn’t escape) and I wear a larger Camelbak (also bought at REI - woohoo co-op membership!) with a tube, tire levers, chain link tool + 6" of chain (don’t laugh this saved my ass once), and an allen wrench set. Also a lightweight rain jacket and a Clif bar. This guy is just my screw-around-at-work bike. We’re on over 1,000 acres, so we can go on a pretty decent ride at lunch.

Still, holy crap! Yeah I have a nice Nalgene bottle with a flip top somwhere that used to do mountain bike cage duty. For the little rides around work things usually don’t get too cruddy and I’ll suck it up and drink a little dust if needed.

Those old Profile cages had a large o-ring in the top groove to keep it tight. Must have broken and fallen out from age. Put a large oil filter o-ring or rubber band into that groove and restore the grip.

I had forgotten about that. I actually bought the cage new and remember it being there now that you mention it. I don’t think it lasted more than a year though.

I was once on a group ride, was about 30-40 riders in a peloton and we were hauling ass. It was towards the beginning of the ride where my bottle had lots of condensation on it. It was hot and humid out so the bottle was slippery in the cage. I hit a nice bump in the road that sent me and the bike airborne. It was hard enough that it knocked the bottle out of the cage onto the road. I was slightly pissed as it was a camelbak chill bottle. I was just glad i didn’t crash and none of the riders behind me hit it luckily so no one crashed.

Nice! I work at a dealership and many times the techs don’t put the new oil filter cap o-rings on every time. I have about a dozen of various sizes I’ve snagged from cartons headed for the trash. I’m pretty certain one of the ones for GM Ecotech engines would work.
