Weight reductions total 47.1 lbs:

15x8 6UL wheels: -15.6 lbs

Wilwood BBK: -14 lbs

Ohlins DFV coilovers: -5 lbs

Lightweight battery: -5 lbs

Windblocker delete: -4 lbs

Sun visor delete: -2 lbs

Head unit upgrade: -1.5 lbs

Weight additions:

Hardtop: +45 lbs

So, with the hardtop on, she weighs 2269 lbs.

Hardtopless, she’s at 2224 lbs. I could get her under 2200 if I decide to remove the air conditioning I never use.

Coupled with the dyno run I did a few years ago (110 hp/100 tq), the Miata at a mile above sea level boasts a hilarious power-to-weight ratio of 20.62/20.21 pounds-per-hp (with/without hardtop).

Once I get the turbo manifold & external wastegate installed on the GTX later this month, I’ll weigh it, too.

I wish my personal weight savings were as effective. Fat status: engaged.

One of these days I’ll weigh Charlie. I get the feeling that I’ll watch the number go down as it rusts off the scale.

I’m loving that color combo with the top.

have you deleted the softtop already ? might as well lol

car looks awesome !

I like to run without the hardtop usually, so if the need arises to put the soft top up, it’s nice to be able to.

Thank you! I keep catching myself staring at it, so I think it was a good choice.

I am intrigued about weighing my mini at some point. Specs say it should be somewhere in the 2300-2500lbs region and I am curious to see where it falls.

Except it’s an MX-5 and I don’t have it anymore. Good effort on the weight loss, have you removed the spare tire?

Kinja'd!!! "MarquetteLa" (marquettela)
02/13/2017 at 16:34, STARS: 0

Yes, the spare won’t clear the 4-piston brake calipers so I don’t carry it at all. The weights listed above include a full tank of fuel, and not much else. Spare tire, jack, and various trunk trimmings were removed prior to weigh-in.

Next step, seats. For the NA at least, going to fixed back racing seats saved me 100 pounds and dramatically increased comfort, leg room, and style (in my opinion at least).

Pretty cool! We have the same wheel/brake combo, albeit in different colors

Racing seats won’t go in until there is a harness bar...with harnesses.

I wanted to get the black Wilwood calipers, but Flyin Miata only had red in stock at the time. Which means I paid an extra $200 for red calipers I didn’t even want. Oh well, they stop like hell!

Keep the a/c.

If you sell the car it’ll bring more cash.

Even if you keep the car for years you’ll find it will be used more later on.

The only modification I regret doing g to my Cougar was removing the A/C

I’m never selling this car. In fact, I’m planning on turning it into an Exocet . Seriously, the A/C is never used. When it is on, the 110 whp plummets to the double-digits. It’s awful. I’m sure that’s not something you experienced with your Cougar.

Fair point. I used the optional oem harness bar with harnesses before getting a blackbird fabworx rollbar, and while I was told it was safe..... I feel a lot better with the rollbar!

Red adds more speed yo

OEM harness bar... are you talking about this?

Kinja'd!!!

Because that’s there for chassis stiffness, and not engineered for use as a harness bar. Glad you’re using a roll bar now!

No. It makes about 3 and a half times that amount.

If it’s gonna be a dedicated race/track only car, yeah go for removal. Otherwise, keep it.

On a scale of 1-10, how much of a difference have you noticed driving it?

Kinja'd!!! "MarquetteLa" (marquettela)
02/13/2017 at 23:12, STARS: 1

I wish I could drive the car as it sits now and the stock car from 5 years ago back-to-back. The coilovers and brakes make such a drastic difference. The weight changes are overshadowed by the improved handling from the coilovers and any stopping distance gains from the lightened load are massively overshadowed by the ridiculous 4-piston brakes on each corner (up from 1).

Any acceleration gains are sadly cancelled out by me moving from sea level to a mile above three years ago :(

Essentially I’ve got the chassis sorted. Now to add more power...

47 pounds is like half a tank of fuel.

Did you take fluids and belongings into account when weighing?

Kinja'd!!! "MarquetteLa" (marquettela)
02/14/2017 at 10:01, STARS: 0

I’m not sure what you mean. I filled up the fuel tank, drove behind the gas station, emptied the car of “belongings” then weighed the car.

That sounds about right.

It’s just there are a number of different ways to weigh a car. And all the fluids can actually vary things quite a bit, fuel being the biggest of course.
