Keeping me from my ideal truck ‘n stuff.

Kinja'd!!!

This is the one. Double cab, 4x4, long bed, neat color, bone stock, rack... I want it, but Jesus Christ $23k for a 6 year old truck? And that’s low blue book! Saw it in person yesterday, it’s nice but for a couple dents.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The Toyota tax is real.

Thanks to $40,000+ new trucks it’s no longer just a Toyota Tax.

Toys are just at the top of the resale heap.

That’s true. I could buy a 6 year old V8/4x4 F150 or Silverado for less, which is appealing but they’re huge, too much truck to daily and park. I used to have an ‘02 TRD Tacoma and wish I’d kept it, it be worth twice the car I daily now. At least my ‘95 F150 does its job just fine when I need it, and I’ve only got about $2500 in it. Hard to haul the family in that though, hence the desire for a double cab. Need to downsize the fleet, and a Tacoma like this could replace two cars.

Just buy a new one and sell it in 5/6 years then buy anouther. A guy I work with is did that and only took about a $6k+gas hit. He looks at it like getting his “forever truck” for $8k.

Taco resale is indeed insane - almost makes more sense to buy a new one instead, kind of similar to the WRX/STI.

The dreaded Subaru tax. Much like the Toyota tax, but it includes crazier owners.

Even many domestics have fairly low depreciation these days. My car has depreciated ~3k in two years, which is on the low end for any car. Not as low as a Subaru, but I could sell it, pay off the loan, and have money left over after less than two years, which is remarkable for any car bought new. The guys in 2013s that arrived in 2012 complain about trade in values in the mid-high teens for their cars with 50-60k miles, which seems like great resale to me for a car that’s 4.5 years old that they bought in the low-mid 20s. I think they’re seeing 1.5-2k depreciation per year, which means they’ll take 25+ years to hit basic transportation prices (assuming there’s a big drop somewhere in the future because these initial numbers are nowhere near normal), if they ever get there at all.

With a Tacoma, the depreciation is so flat that I don’t know why anyone would ever buy used. Between incentives, new car financing, and resale, I don’t see how you could come out ahead on a used one.

Tacoma prices are nuts! I was shopping them for months but found an F150 for less with less miles and a V8

Buy it, drive it for 10 years, sell it for $20k...

What’s the problem again?

Pyrite mica is nice.

The resale is indeed crazy. It’s a great truck, it’s dependable (I have a 2015, so anything this new BETTER be dependable), and I like its size. It isn’t perfect, but it really is all I need in a truck. My ‘12 Tundra Crewmax was huge, and more than I needed. That rear seat room, though. It was awesome!

I still have plans to let my son “have” the truck when he’s 16, but I think I’ve pulled the plug on just giving it to him free and clear. In 9 years time, it’ll apparently still be worth too much to let a teenager smash it to bits!

Am I the only one staring at that golden LS400? Too bad it has a flat tire.

I think my ‘06 Super Crew FX4 wasn’t nearly that expensive when I bought it with 10k miles. In 2007.

You want an LS400? I can get you an LS400, dude. I’ve occasionally thought about picking up one to daily, they’re dirt cheap and great cars.

Yeah Tacoma resale is properly insane, I could buy a newer V8 4x4 full-size Ford or Chevy for less easily. But these are the right size and are the highest quality, plus daily driving a full size is ridiculous. I guess my old beater ‘95 F150 will have to do its job for awhile longer!

Could you get a good 1st gen Manučl SC300 as well? I’ve always loved those early Lexii. That first gen IS still appeals to me a lot as well. Not sure if the 300 was available with a Manučl though. I did experience the ISF, that was a total blast.

Hard to find with a manual, but they’re out there. I still see some first gen IS’s too, even the occasional SportCross wagon! We could get the sedans with manuals here if I’m not mistaken.
