In the meanwhile, enjoy some brief highlights from my trip.

Kinja'd!!!

This was in the parking lot at the Alamodome. That groaning sound everyone just heard? That was all the Toyota-worshipers on Oppo simultaneously.

Kinja'd!!!

This bacon was on the menu as an appetizer.

Kinja'd!!!

It was almost a centimeter thick, and it was glorious.

Kinja'd!!!

A 22oz bone-in New York strip medium rare? Yes please.

Kinja'd!!!

I had no idea that there was a biergarten near the Riverwalk. I’ve been coming to TMEA for over a decade, and I’ve been missing out on this deliciousness???

Of course, the last night, the friend I was crashing with asked me to cook Thai for him. Why not?

Kinja'd!!!

Thom kha gai...

Kinja'd!!!

...and lahp nuah. Not to boast, but I’m good at the Thai food.

Oh, I guess I went to some clinics and bought some clarinet mouthpieces and ligatures and reeds and tried out instruments and bought jazz band music for my kids and all other kinds of music educator stuff. But I’m sure you’re not concerned with that. However, on the drive back to El Paso:

Kinja'd!!!

Even if I wasn’t responsible for the first 180,000, that’s the first time I’ve rolled that number on any vehicle. For as much as I make fun of Toyota...*sigh*

Ok first of all: the bacon, where? I need to check it out. Also, next time you’re in SA, give a shout and we can go drive around some nice Hill Country roads.

What roads do you drive? I might be driving the twisted sisters for the first time next weekend with a friend.

I’m probably missing the best stuff TBH. I haven’t done the full twisted sisters, but I have been on 337. My favorite stuff is out near Vanderpool/Utopia/Concan. Basically go to Bandera and head out from there. Gotta do some boring flat stuff for about half an hour to get to it. Ran into a random M3/M4 owners club drive out in Utopia a couple years ago, that was cool. But even closer to town you can have some fun on PR37 between 16 and the Lake Medina and on parts of TX46. Also within city limits, Cielo Vista between IH10 and Babcock is a fun stretch even if it’s only for 5 minutes. I usually find Porsches out there going idiotically fast considering cyclists also use the road and there are a couple blind corners.

Bob’s Chop and Steakhouse. Easily one of the two best steaks I’ve ever eaten in my life. That plate of two slices of bacon was ten bucks and worth every penny. (The steak was $70.)

I’ve found that steakhouses tend to be overpriced or right on the money (and never ever underpriced). You get exactly what you pay for, or a place charges twice as much as they should just because they have a particular atmosphere or a cultivated but undeserved mystique (*cough cough Kirby’s cough Ruth’s Chris cough cough*). Of course, I don’t claim to have eaten at every fine steakery, but I do try to give everyone a fair shot.

On the steak alone, Fleming’s in Austin wins. But this bacon? Good Lord. With the Indian Cliffs Cattleman’s Ranch in El Paso a distant third.

I do like to get out to Indian Cliffs at least a couple of time a year. Have you ever been to Adobe Deli, outside of Deming?

I spent nine years in Las Cruces and a semester in Silver City (driving back to Cruces every weekend), and I don’t think I ever stopped in Deming...not even once. But now that I know that there is something in Deming worth stopping for, I will have to give it a try. ^_^

The Adobe Deli is the second best steak you can get in Far West Texas/Southern NM. Their bacon wrapped filet is a mighty fine piece of dead animal. It is not quite as good as Indian Cliffs, but the whole place is a different kind of experience. It is also the only thing worth stopping at in Deming.

The real reason to go there is the soup. They serve a French onion soup that a friend of mine who used to live in France describes as the only place outside of France shes ever had French Onion soup that is like the French do it. It is covered with an amazing layer of cheese sourced from the dairy just up the road. It is glorious, and I don’t even particularly like soup in general.

The whole place is best described as an experience, and it is even better if you get the surely waitress. The building is an old school house. Adobe Deli is best appreciated as an entire evening experience. Pile folks up in a vehicle, place your order, take your drink to the smoking lounge (which is the old school library, and it still has all the books in it along with some other interesting items), by time you’ve finished your drink your soup will be waiting for you, eat quality dead animals, entertain the idea of dessert, then get more drinks and stop by the humidor to pick out the cigar of your choice and retire to the smoking lounge for the rest of the evening.

It is a place to look up directions for before going there the first time, as it is actually on a dirt road about 10 miles outside of Deming. It is not a place one would likely to stumble across unless you already knew about it.
