Jerome had his foot on the clutch throughout? So I guess drifting is actually quite bad on the clutch.

dual clutch car, you can see the flappy pedals behind the wheel.

Does BMW make a road car with a clutch pedal and paddle shifters?

Ah... missed that. Strangely the brake pedal isn’t a wide one though, that’s what made me think the clutch was depressed.

The narrow brake pedal threw me off.

You would be all over the clutch while drifting however that car does not have a clutch.

He looks like a French Matt LeBlanc.

Did Hammond not actually know “how to drift” until filming this? Or is it just acting for the sake of producing a fun segment?

Makes me wonder about all the driving experience he, Clarkson, and May have accumulated over the years. I’m sure they had stunt drivers take care of the most extreme stuff, but spending time in such a wide variety of cars and driving situations must do wonders for improving one’s skill and adaptability. I’m jealous.

I spy a Porsche 911 GT3 RS driver seat in a BMW.

Apparently it was at Jerome’s request.

Dead pedal. But yes drifting with a manual car does involve a clutch kick quite often and burns through material quicker than usual.

How often would they get the chance to actually do drifting though and to be blunt. If you can’t see their heads during a shot they ain’t driving because film production hasn’t got the time for people to be spinning out and wasting the light.

Yeah, I’m not sure how much time they spend near “the limit”, or how close they even are to that when filming in-car footage.

But I have to think that they’ve already spun out so many times that they have some idea of what they’re doing by now. Even without proper drift training, they’ve experienced understeer, oversteer, and done donuts in cars of all shapes & sizes.

Even in low traction, and just using power through to induce oversteer?

Its a common technique for low power cars, or when you need to get the rear wheels to spin immediately. I don’t know exactly how much you’d need to use it when you’re on a wet skidpan though.

I don’t thing that’s how you’re gonna learn car control. I mean take Chris Harris for example. He did a decade’s worth of lessons to get to his level and that was continuous. The trio take relatively long brakes between driving cars and only rarely get to drive them flat out.

As has been already said, it’s a dual clutch car. You never really sit on the clutch while drifting, although you typically have to clutch kick a decent bit. Stay somewhat on throttle, then give the clutch a quick stab to cause a driveline jolt big enough to break the rear end loose. It typically goes through clutch material faster than normal driving, although many people who frequently drift already have a Stage 2 (or equivalent) clutch that’s suited for this abuse.
