I need to get a safety inspection in order to get my car registered, and my horn hasn’t been working for the last few months. I found one at the junkyard today, but not knowing what was installed in my car I didn’t realize that the mounting of the American-made FIAMM installed in my Japanese car was a bit different than what I purchased.

I made an extension for the positive connection, but it turns out that the bolt I mounted the horn to isn’t grounded. I know it’s kind of half-assed, but a cable with some alligator clips got me to a proper chassis ground. It works for now and should get me through the inspection; I’ll make a proper cable in the next few days. It’s getting cold outside and my arm is quite scratched up from reaching down between the headlight and airbox to make the electrical connection. I didn’t feel like pulling off the whole bumper cover, and reached into the tight spaces instead even though it shredded my arm.

If anything, driving without a horn has made me a little more polite and less likely to beep all of the stupidity I see whilst trying to survive being surrounded by inattentive morons too busy texting, eating and drinking to be bothered to actually pilot their vehicles.

Nice workaround! After putting hella horns on my car last summer or spring I’ve used them twice, and once was saying hi and I regretfully scared the crap out of my bud, I forgot they were loud.

I went for a month or two (unknowingly) without a horn. Almost got backed into when I discovered it didn’t work.

Pro Tip: for unknowable reasons, the power feed for the horn in the Panther platform is routed through the cruise control module. If you unplug it, you’ll have no horn...

I need to hookup my cheapo ooga horn from harbor freight. I just don’t wanna.

They’re also a huge PITA to activate on the 96-97 cars. Such a small sweet spot on the airbag cover.

After what I went through today I don’t blame you...

I picked up an airhorn at a scrap metal/antique store in mexico for a couple bucks, unfortunately (and confusingly) it runs off of 120V AC

I want to run it as a secondary and have my wiring not look shitty. I have plenty of room to work I just don’t want to have to do a good job. I may also have to fabricate a mount or put it in a shitty place like you did.

It’s really not mounted in such a bad location. If nothing else, it keeps it out of the path of water that killed the last one. The only thing truly shitty about the install is the alligator clip wiring, but once I get a few terminals I’ll make a better harness to connect it to ground.

Some day, if I take the front bumper cover off (which will probably be necessary to push out the puncture damage from the assmunch that backed into me with his trailer hitch) I’ll reposition the horn to a more factory-like location. But that’s a lot of time and fasteners, and I’ll wait until spring to do that task. I’ve got another hack that involves accessing the wiring to the rear speakers, and that is going to be a near complete interior disassembly to get to those connectors, so that too will have to wait until Spring has sprung. These manufacturers certainly don’t make disassembly easy...

I feel you on the disassembly. I need to replace the heater core in my Jeep but do not feel like taking apart a multi piece dash. Then I learn to remove a piece that I need to to fix the headliner requires removing the most difficult piece of the dash anyways. So I’ll tackle those when I feel like doing both at the same time. I’ll deal with the cold!
