I seen this scenario play out way so many times. Which is great because it allows me to jump the queue.

Of all the consequences of a possible immigration ban (which I am against), this one worries me least. Most of those foreign trained doctors are coming in to fill the lower tier residency programs that could not compete for the best domestic graduates. So it’s the lesser trained docs entering the lesser training programs. I’m sure some of them are quite good, but it’s not like we are losing a significant part of our best medical talent if they don’t come.

Some of these people are actively dangerous, in my experience. Just as I wouldn’t trust all the failures from the US that went to Granada back in the day to get their education, I wouldn’t trust someone that went to the University of Allepo.

The issue is that these are often the only ones that will work in poorer, more rural areas

This is often true. Partly because they cannot compete for higher profile positions, partly because our system in the US glorifies specialty training. The previous president of our health science center made a big push for family practice in rural medicine with our medical school.

Yes, as I said, some of them are fine physicians. But truthfully, the medical education in those countries just can’t hold a candle to accredited American schools, in general. I wouldn’t feel comfortable rolling the dice unless one had significant US residency training at a top notch program.
