Kinja'd!!!

I need to purchase a new base layer to wear under my motorcycle leathers. Traditionally I have worn Under Armour with good results. However, given recent political statements by some of the brand’s endorsees, I’d prefer if those endorsees didn’t get any of the proceeds of my purchases.

Upon further research, it seems like the US Olympic Bobsled Team is sponsored by UA, and they also haven’t made any stupid political statements in the media recently. I haven’t been able to figure out how they get paid though. Would I have to buy a bobsledding onesie for them to get royalties? At least the driver seems like a pretty good dude based on what is listed on the bio on their website:

Eagle scout to Army National Guard to World Champion to Olympic Gold medalist; Holcomb is no stranger to success. However, a debilitating eye condition called Keratoconus caused his vision to fade from 20/20 to 20/1000 and nearly ended his career. Battling through severe depression, Holcomb overcame his condition and was once again successful. As the lead driver for the US Bobsled National team, Holcomb has racked up 3 Olympic medals including Gold in 2010, 5 World Championship titles, 5 World Cup Overall titles, and over 55 World Cup medals; the most ever by an American. This team veteran is poised to lead the USA back to the top in 2018.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I’m open to choosing other brands if there is something that works better - Basically need a few each of compression shirts and long pants to keep cool and dry, in addition to making sure my leathers don’t stick to me. I ride a lot in the heat and sweat a lot.

My primary decision factors, in order of importance:

1) Product quality

2) Price

3) Political opinions of celebrities endorsed by the brand

4) Utilization of poorly compensated children in sweatshop manufacturing in 3rd world countries

Any suggestions?

They’ll probably drop the players that spoke against them at some point.

I cannot personally bring myself to go through and make sure every product I own or use was manufactured and endorsed by people whose political beliefs align with mine. But hey, whatever gets you through the night.

Alternatively you could not let politics consume your life to the point where it determines your purchases, and just go for whatever works best at the cheapest price.

Not going out of my way to do so. However, if I read an article where a person representing a company is voicing strong political opinions that differ from mine, I’ll reconcider my purchasing decisions.

By buying under armor you can still support the backward bigoted CEO who apparently you align with. An endorsement deal doesn’t mean you own someone. By criticizing the comments of the CEO those athletes made an financial decision. Good for them putting justice over a couple of bucks.

Right? I remember when the CEO of Chick-Fil-A made some remarks a couple years ago, I thought, “Damn, that goes against everything I fundamentally believe in. But I recognize there are going to be people with beliefs I don’t like and this chicken is awesome.”

As a anarcho-conservative that feels the first order of priority should be burning roadkill for electricity production, there wouldn’t be many products I could buy if I didn’t buy ones that differed with my politics.

How is the CEO “backward and bigoted”? He said in an interview with CNBC while discussing the company’s financial results that he respects the president for being passionate, pro-business, and decisive. That’s it. I fail to see anything more in there, especially given the context of the interview.

The comments that caused the uproar:

PLANK ON TRUMP

I think he’s highly passionate. To have such a pro-business President is something that is a real asset for the country. People can really grab that opportunity. He loves to build I don’t think there’s any surprises here. When you look at the president he wants to build things. He wants to build things he wants to make bold decisions and be really decisive. I’m a big fan of people that operate in the world of publish and iterate versus think, think, think, think, think. So there’s a lot that I respect there.

I’m going to have to put on a flamesuit for this tangent...

Not everything is political!

No, really. It’s not! Being perpetually outraged about X (for value of X) is exhausting. It also means that if you are outraged for all X, then you have no concept of *picking your battles*. It also means, counter intuitively, that people will take you less seriously, since you don’t have any communication method other than utter outrage, and thus you get ignored.

There are times to fight like hell (Know what the Prize is and then Eyes on the Prize, though. It’s not enough to just resist, using the current popular idea), and times to step back and let them (whoever they are) have enough rope to hang themselves (and they will do it).

For your original question, just pick whatever you feel is the best product and move on.

voting with your money is probably more powerful than voting in an election.

It’s easier than you think. I haven’t bought Unilever, P&G or Coca-Cola products in 12 years. I also buy second hand smart phones so I can be smug and not aid in unregulated nickel mining and poor working conditions in China.

UA essentially abandoned one of its largest customer bases, hunters, by dropping their endorsement for several highly influential spokespeople for ethical hunting and conservationism due to complaints from a relative handful of anti-hunting extremists. Apparently the backlash from the hunting community was enough to put quite the hurt on financially. So fuck UA IMO, I’ll still wear the stuff I have, because they make a good product, but if they’re going to be spineless push overs and abandon one of their most important customer bases then I see no need to support them.

I’m all for free-balling when appropriate, but can’t do that under leathers. Once your skin gets sweaty the leather sticks to it and you can’t get out.

I have many brands of compression tights.

My favorites are some Reeboks that I got on sale at Marshall’s and are from a couple seasons ago so not sure if the current styles are the same material. They are stretchy and soft and keep my temp regulated while being super comfy.

If you’re looking for a thin base layer, Nike Pro HyperCool are a thinner material and have some mesh panels for breathability. Those might be a better choice for your use.

Adidas Climalite boxer briefs are my favorite but I haven’t tried their tights. The tights are called Techfit Base Tights, they’re made with that Climalite material.
