Yesterday I took my hitch off to see how bad the rust I could see was elswhere. It was pretty bad, as I needed to do something about it or stop towing with it.

Here is what I took off with the angle grinder.

I’ll hit it with some rust converter, then some primer on top, then a few coats of black. I think I will also attempt to weld a 7 pin tab on the top, wish me luck trying out the welder for the first time. I’m actually a little surprised how mild the steel was, I thought “hitch steel” would be a little less malleable. oh well, there is never more than 400 lbs on the tongue so it should hold up just fine.

If the steel was less malleable, it would be more brittle. It may seem counterintuitive, but it actually makes sense.

FWIW, I’ve heard wonderous things about a black enamel paint called “Blitz Black” sold by John Deere. It’s supposedly hella durable (intended for implements, left outside, etc etc.) Lots of people on ‘Mud use it for knuckle housings, axle housings, etc.

Come give me your rust. The trailer hitch was GONE from the T100 I bought. Not because someone removed it, but because it rusted away.

Sold that thing Friday. Thank goodness.

that was fast. Whats the plan now?

As for mine, remember that there was no rust on this when I bought it 3 years ago.

Not sure yet. GMT800 Chevy pickup is on the top of the “this is what you should get” list, but man I really don’t enjoy those trucks at all. Going to wait til Spring probably and see where I’m at... maybe a 1st gen Tundra? I love those just don’t want to get bitten by the rust BS again.

Look into Eastwood’s stuff. I plan on bathing whatever I get next in all of their undercoat and frame paint.

I need to do a serious rust regime come spring, but Im not going to do it until its warm and dray for a while. Just find a truck you like from a rust free place and you can get whatever you want, then rust proof from there.

Yea, I’ll probably be making a road trip down south for one. 4.7 first gen Tundra seem to be pretty good otherwise.

Yup, just make sure to get one with the timing belt service done and you shouldn’t have to worry about it.
