Harbor freight dual action polisher,Chemical Guys orange buffing pad, Meguiar’s ultra-cut compound followed by wax with Meguair’s Quick Wax. It wasn’t aggressive enough to get most of the scratching out but it got out the super bad hologramming and haziness that the paint had. A nicer wax would probably have helped but I was quickly running out of daylight.

Also fixed an issue with an intermittent headlight. The problem might be that it was on fire. Grabbed some heat shrink, solder, a wire stripper, and a lighter and went to autozone and soldered on a new pigtail and put in a new bulb in the parking lot, and no less than three people approached asking questions about the car (oh that’s cool what is it I’ve never seen one I thought it was a corvette I didn’t know Saturn made something like that etc.)

Local tire shop broke this panel while jacking the car up. They’re going to be paying a body shop to replace it and color match, so part of the reason I did this attempt at paint correction was so that the panel wouldn’t look so much newer than the rest of the car.

A car that’s worth maybe $5000 to the right buyer? I suppose. She also had a crew cab S10 ZR2 which was *stupid rare*.

Nice job. It’s so hard keeping black cars shiny and scratch free. The one downside to my new purchase.

Anytime a fun car dies it’s unfortunate

Looks good.

When going for an ultra compound (which should of taken those swirls out no problem with a hard polishing or cutting pad) you should always follow it up with a medium cut polish and a finishing polish to remove the hazing and holograms.

A wax will not remove swirls, micromarring, etc... they will only fill them in till the wax or resin breaks down or removed.

A high filler wax like a glaze will hide more but they will still be there.

Blacks and dark colours are finicky to work with but look great when done.

Shiny car is best car! I can’t wait for the weather to improve so I can set about it myself, The Leon has only been cleaned by the local hand car wash since I got it just before Xmas (apart from some quick detailer in near freezing conditions), I can see the swirl marks building up already when the sun shines! :(

Looking great for a 2 stage, but if you’re using any form of abrasive compound and don’t wax your car with frequent regularity I’d at a sealant beneath the carnuba wax. To aid with removal of the rest of the swirling best possible (without additional cutting power), a nice fine cut polish will help with the finer swirls the more abrasive compounds leave or can’t deal with, that follwed by an optional glaze before the sealant. If you use a rubbing compound in the future though (or really any time you’re using an orbital polisher) be sure to clay bar. The dirt and dust in the clear coat can cause even more scratching if spun over the paint on a pad. I’m no professional, but just things I’ve picked up reading and doing it on my cars a healthy amount.

Yeah, I was going to do a polish after the buff but ran out of daylight (and would have had to wash my pad). I need to look into sealants and coatings but there’s a ridiculous variety of prices and such.

How often do you clay bar? A non-abrasive clay bar is all I’d recommend if you’re following it with a polish or rubbing compound. The detailing book autogeek.net ships with kits is actually a fantastic read for technique and details. I know what you mean abou length of time though, I’ve split detailing over multiple days every time I do multi-stage. I use Wolfgang’s 3.0 sealant. It’s expensive but it lasts and with it being my second car like yours that’s 6 months a year I only need to re clay bar and do the entire process once a year (I re wax in the summer), for the amount of rain and inclement weather it sees there’s really no reason to do it again in the summer (only 4K miles a year in great weather).

I actually don’t have a clay bar. I’ll probably get one with the next round of detailing stuff I buy.

You’d never believe how glass smooth paint can be until you’ve clay bar’d it.
