TL;DW. So you dig two holes right next to each other, one a little smaller than the other. Then you dig out the bottom of the wall separating the two. Put your wood in the bigger hole and light it. The walls direct more of the heat up, for cooking, and the smaller vent hole draws air and feeds it through the bottom. So it burns hotter and directs the heat more upward than a traditional fire.

It’s a form of a rocket stove. You can also reverse the air flow to keep from consuming all of the wood so quickly. When starting the fire, you blow into the hole with the wood to get a down draft and the other side acts like a chimney.

You might be interested in how the romans heated their homes and baths. They used a hypocaust. Chimneys were built into the walls and the fire was on the other side of the building. The hot air traveled under a raised floor to get to the chimney, heating the whole place. It was the original in-floor heating system.

That was an incredibly creepy video. Useful info though.

I can’t remember what this fire is called (didn’t watch the video yet) but I’ve been wanting to try this for a while now. Is a good “stealth” fire because of little smoke and light emissions

Also important to still pour water on it. If there is a thick leaf layer it can still smolder.

I can’t think of the name either, but it’s the same principle as a chimenea

Dakota fire hole. That’s it

the dakota fire hole is also a tactical solution when you need to observe light discipline - the flame is obscured as opposed to a surface fire. You can also us a smaller flame more efficiently, so it reduces the amount of smoke produced.
