Kinja'd!!!

I’m sure many of you have seen this in the past couple of days.

So I made a gofundme for this car:I’ve found myself very obsessed with it over the last 48 hours; so I thought I might as well try and sort out how to actually get it before it disappears.

Edit: I stripped out content so this is more normal.

I made the page basically so supporters of what I do would be able to see how the fundraising is going. It’s funny, I posted it to my facebook page (which most of my supporters see regularly) and some random friend of a friend was super offended by it. Too the point of spamming the post with comments for an hour about what a horrible human being I am.

Something that the crew on Oppo doesn’t even consider doing. I really am amazed at how good this community is.

Sure, I’m out of money, moving to another country myself at the moment. Please donate to me for my choices.

I’m sorry, but this is something you should have accounted for in advance.
Glad you’ve been obsessed with is for 48 hours, but maybe you should have been for a few months.
Asides from disagreeing with your reason for moving, which is your own deal. Don’t come ask for others to deal/pay for your decisions which you could have avoided/ planned better.

I didn’t see the links before and was a bit confused, wasn’t trying to come off like that. This was supposed to go to OP, but oh well.

Car ownership is a luxury and a lot of people have no means of owning a car to begin with. I’d suggest a much lower goal and a more modest choice in vehicle if you really need a vehicle. Also, IIRC Okinawa has pretty good public transportation.

I respect that you’re doing missionary work in a foreign country, but for a GoFundMe type deal, I think you’d have better success with different parameters.

I hate to be that guy, but if you’re strapped for cash, a 10+ year old turbo Subaru is not the car you should buy.

Also, what is your plan for the insurance/fuel? That thing can’t be too economical to run considering it’s a ~276 HP turbocharged AWD sports sedan.

Is the missionary work in a first world nation supposed to tug on my heartstrings?

So...mixed feelings about this. I’ve done multiple long term mission trips and had to scrounge together a lot of my own money and rely on some donated money to get by. Mostly I used personal finances for food, rent, etc. and donated supplies and money to build houses for the poor. Public transportation was the only way for me to get around and was dangerous (I was robbed at gunpoint multiple times) so I get the desire for having a car.

However, if you are relying solely on the kindness of others, you really ought to go for something modest and reliable. A turbo Subaru is a time bomb and really sounds like a selfish choice for a vehicle. I totally get being a car fanatic and missing that aspect of life, but I think you’re going to have much better luck if you can demonstrate a real need for something reasonable.

Good luck, but don’t get too excited. I know a single mother (well previously), who lost her job, then house, then car AND finally her son only raise $5 using GoFundMe. It was a real sad story, but TBH one she brought on herself. Not that strangers would know that. She was asking for money for a cheap car, so she could get a job, so she could get an apartment, and just maybe get her son back.

While I believe everyone should “give”, this is pretty far down on the priority list for me.

Oh, I agree, I wasn’t thinking this was a timebomb though. At about 80,000 miles with the timing belt changed recently I figure it would be good for at least another 20,000 which is probably about how long our visa is good for. I figured it was reasonable. But that’s probably the car fanatic talking me into what I want.

No, it’s just what I do, and gofundme said I needed to state why I needed the car, what I would use it for, etc. I wrote what they required/recommended for the post.

I actually only made a gofundme because a long term supporter had recommended it at some point so supporters could see how the progress is going on a project.

Oh, I’ve been working and planning for months, our date to move came, and we were still short funds for the car, but needed to move at that date.
I was just throwing it out there since we mention group buys all the time.

I haven’t heard good things about the public transportation here for being on time, which is sort of the thing with work related things, but I haven’t used the bus because of what others have told me. maybe I should.

If you were trying to get a 20 year old Impreza that would be one thing, but a turbo Legacy, hahahaha. And trying to get strangers to help you buy a car? Much less so you can go spread false notions of a higher being? No. Get a job, earn money, buy car.

I hope some people are willing to donate for your car. I’d get about $13 total if I ask for donations. I want to point out that I’d put $12 of my own money into the thing first. :P

20 year old Imprezas are still a little too expensive if they are in decent shape or have had unwholesome things done to them that make driving them with other people in the car questionable. There is a nice Lancer Evo that is just a year older for about the same money though.

A few people have already, the people who I actually expect to be interested in giving, and who the gofundme page is really for so that they can see progress.

Not that I care too much if you disagree with me about the existence of higher beings, but I don’t go spread notions (false or otherwise).
Below the Impreza for your time is what my job for a not-for-profit is if you care to read. (I think it’s a worthwhile one for society) I don’t expect you to agree with me, but at least we can agree that cars are good.

Kinja'd!!!

(I hope Kinja rotates it back to vertical when I hit publish)

I teach people (who already believe the same as I do) how to study the Bible inductively, and if I do it right then their study should show them that it is not worth believing if it is indeed false. They draw their own conclusions after a 9 month study of the text as a historical piece of literature as judged by the standards of historians. There is lots of disagreement on this topic of course, but that’s one of the things that makes it worth studying.
I do think that a lot of what Christians try and spread is a bunch of BS from people who needed to create some new theory to prove that they deserved a MDIV or a Doctorate. Those were layered on top of others ideas, and we get a distorted Christianity and study of the Bible.
I think it’s worth teaching that through a not-for-profit as my job (which unfortunately, includes me raising funds so they can pay me for my job).
The joy is that I at least get to teach people how to think critically, and ask questions and not take for granted that what someone told them is true simply because of the assumed authority/knowledge of the person.
