Kinja'd!!!

I’m looking for some edumacation on the D2 S8, particularly the post facelift model. Schaefft has the car wants again so we’re going to look at one tomorrow. It has gearbox issues as is common, but it’s at a price that still makes it worthwhile. Besides the box is there anything else that is important to check on them?

Timing chain servicing.

Transmission issues. The timing chain issue is WAY overblown.

Also, don’t listen to people that don’t know what they’re talking about.

So the timing chain is more of a few noisy people on forums, than a likely issue? Its on 140k so I assume if it was going to stretch it would’ve by now. We’ll obviously check it for noise and ask if it’s the original one.

Will have to see if it’s the original one and whether it is making any noise.

It’s not as common as people say it is.

Apparently these actually used a belt. So no problems at all provided that has been changed somewhat recently.

Audi have made a few different v8s in the last 20 or so years with similar capacities so it’s hard to work out what uses what. Most parts sites list both a chain and belt for the car, but the majority of sources claim its a belt.

It’s a belt not a chain. Allroad got the timing chain motor, but the D3 A8 even had the belt engine. They can need cam chain tensioners, but that’s nowhere near the expense of the B6/B7 S4 and Allroad engine. Make sure the timing belt and water pump have been recently.(with a oem water pump and tensioners)

This engine is about as solid as can be. Common problems are intake manifold linkage and the mentioned cam chain tensioners.

Yeah I push all the buttons when I view a car anyway, because my cars are all base models with no gadgets. I looked at a volvo s90 at a car show recently and soent ten minutes sampling the automatic boot open and closee because OOO SHINY GADGETS.
