First, locate parts. Apparently, because Ford, the parts I thought would be less than $15.00 a piece, will now run me almost $30 a piece or more. Several parts stores only have one side (???), or just the outer tie rod ends that go for $40 or so, even though their online site says they have the lower priced parts in stock. I have gone to four different parts stores, and am now headed back to the first, O’Reily’s, to get the parts and finally get to work on my poor, rattling ass of a car. It’s not looking good at the moment. I hope this doesn’t turn out to be some clusterfuck of repair. It looks easy enough.

A Focus? I replaced both side on mine last fall. It is pretty straight forward. Loosen the jamb nut then leave it finger tight against the tie rod end. Screw the new one on till it hits the jamb nut and you shouldn’t need an alignment.

The sway bar end links are a common culprit for front end rattling with the Focus. You might want to pull on those a little while you are under there to see if there is any play.

Have a mapp gas torch handy if possible. Helps if the jamb nut gives you trouble. If you have a day or two, you could check out rockauto or amazon for the parts. You can normally get better quality parts for cheaper.

Auto parts stores seem like they never have anything on hand that I need, so now I mostly use rockauto or amazon for parts. And generally they are quite a bit cheaper.
