It was a great little trucklet, very capable for towing, offroading, snow, loading up back. Good handling for a high rise, small enough to park in DC. 3.3 was bulletproof. Was getting to all the midlife maintenance and I decided I really missed driving a small car... plus gives me a $ cushion if anything were to go wrong with the S2k, otherwise I’d have kept it...

I’ve been contemplating looking at one to take out to AZ if needed and it’s really the only SUV that I somewhat like.

4 Runners are very similar as well as the Pathfinder trucks of the era in terms of size, capabilities and price range... but I do prefer the looks and seating setup of the X, I think it may be slightly shorter too.
The first gens, you want a SE 4x4 with the LSD and factory 16s, I’d stay away from the RWD models, or SEs without the fog lights, 16s, and LSD.... I’ve heard the later versions with the more powerful detuned Altima V6 tend to have drivetrain and reliability issues, plus they cost more. The SOHC 3.3L is a dog (170/180hp), but it’ll never die and has great torque from 1500 up. The low gearbox will get you up most Arizona trails, pretty much everything with some wide 31" tires and a $150 poor man’s lift. Saw them everywhere when I went offroading with my friend in his crawling modded XJ when I lived in AZ.

Sheet metal was good on this one. If I sell my Fiat this summer I may get an old sharknose BMW... Will have to be on the lookout for rust, for sure!
