Those were great RVs and were pretty affordable if you wanted to restore a vintage RV. GM really overbuilt them to the point that they kind of didn’t make much money from the venture. However, they’ve become desirable by the instagram types, so now they’re overpriced for what they are (fucking typical of everything that has great reliable value, they get found out, prices sky rocket, and then they’re no longer a great deal. I’m looking at you, FJ60/62 Land Cruiser). Which sucks, cause they’re such a great platform, but the costs of reworking and rebuilding are climbing.

Not only that, they originally had PLAID UPHOLSTERY. Which we all know is the greatest upholstery ever.

As someone that still wants a Vanagon Westfalia, I know exactly what you’re talking about. Even basic, used ones are now exceeding their original list price (not even adjusted for inflation), and they weren’t exactly cheap to begin with.

yeah, not even talking about syncros who’s prices are pure insanity. You can get a used Sportsmobile for the price of a syncro or in some cases Westfalia.

Yes, a Sportsmobile would be the logical choice between these two vehicles. But I am not afraid to admit that my desire for a Westfalia is purely emotional. I have no great desire to go camping, and I know from first-hand experience that these things can be temperamental and perhaps unsafe (I totaled my Vanagon and was quite surprised how little interior intrusion there was despite the massive exterior damage), but I still want one.
