Kinja'd!!!

So there I am, just driving home from work (on the 880, which, for the record, may be the worst freeway in the state). Traffic is just letting up, when I notice a CHP Explorer merge onto the freeway right behind me and then just start swerving back and forth across all 4 lanes of the freeway. At this point I’m past him, so I’m watching the scene unfold through my rear view mirror, equally disturbed and amazed. He is single-handedly able to block and slow all four lanes of traffic.

Any thoughts on what they were doing? State controlled, cop enforced traffic regulation? CHP officer gone rogue? Just some state trooper shenanigans? You’d think they’d use more cars than just the one to shut down the lanes though no?

Just creating a space in traffic, either prepping to close or so something big can get on at the next entrance.

Slowing traffic so that something ahead can be cleared from the road. Creating a traffic break , I think they call it. Happens often. Sometimes they’ll use a fire truck for that purpose.

It’s called a rolling road block used when a road needs an open space. Often used for Presidential motorcades.

It’s called creating a traffic break. They do it for various reasons. One of which is for the safe removal of debris.

Somewhere around here there’s an article about this. In short though, the others are right.

This is super common, I’m surprised you’ve never seen it before. They are either slowing traffic in advance of an obstacle or hazard, or they are stopping traffic entirely, for the same reason. If they start doing this in front of you, DO NOT PASS THEM. There are probably more up ahead dealing with the hazard, or if they are removing debris then they’ll remove it quickly and chase you down.

They almost always use one car. As you saw for yourself, there’s no need for an additional CHP car, so why waste resources.
