That time Ram was going for maximum truck driver feels and ended up making a 24 foot long truck.

Kinja'd!!!

Ram 5500 megacab...with a long bed...and an extra extension in the middle for addition fuel for a total capacity of 300 (!) gallons plus 38 gallons of diesel pee. It weighed 9300 lbs dry and nearly 12,000 lbs fully fueled with no one on board.

Kinja'd!!!

Thats a little more than half its 19,500 GVWR. Even with people and fuel it could still put my 97 Land Cruiser in the bed and have payload to spare. It could tow 9 tons as well. It was...big. For perspective its a foot longer in wheelbase than my Cruiser is long.

Kinja'd!!!

it gets about 12 mpg, which means you could fill up in Sand Diego and drive to Houlton Maine without stopping for fuel.

Which actually wouldn’t be too hard to do with some relief drivers because the mega cab has all the room you need to sleep, stretch or well...don’t go to the bathroom in there, have some decency.

Kinja'd!!!

Seriously, you could put a camping pad on the floor and have a pretty good sleep.

Kinja'd!!!

Not as bad as you might think, they estimated the cost at just over 100k. Of course every fillup is going to cost you a grand

Im not immune to this line of thinking. What a cool way to tour the country with a big 5th wheel...so long as you don’t have to park it anywhere. solution: a pair of Honda africa twins between the cab and the trailer.

it was a one off concept to gauge interest in special builds. This one was used as a racecar hauler for the company.

nope, just a proof of concept. I think they were trying to see if there was interest in a special build market for this kind of thing. I suspect there was but it was already pretty well fulfilled with Kodiaks and the like.

I wonder if there’s actually a market for what they made. It’s in between a 1-ton and a full-on big rig tractor. Big rigs are not that much more expensive than this truck, though I wonder what theoretical operating costs between the two would be like. Definitely an interesting concept, thanks for the post.

Probably depends on how it’s used.

Some states require a CDL for 10,001 if it’s being used commercially, 26,001 if it’s not, with exceptions for RVs.

What’s going on with that box between the cab and the bed?

Kinja'd!!! "HammerheadFistpunch" (hammerheadfistpunch)
02/10/2017 at 18:05, STARS: 3

The chassis they used was too long for even the mega cab and long bed, so they had to fab up something in the middle...which turned out to be a gas tank.

Kinja'd!!! "Urambo Tauro" (urambotauro)
02/10/2017 at 18:13, STARS: 0

Huh. I was expecting it to be an awkwardly-sized tool box. Ford had that “MidBox” with the external door and drawers that pulled out, but it was almost twice as wide as this. All I see here is what looks to be a lockable top.

I guess it makes sense that a narrow space like that would be used for fuel. I wonder if it’s tied in with the diamond-plate tank in the bed?

Kinja'd!!! "HammerheadFistpunch" (hammerheadfistpunch)
02/10/2017 at 18:16, STARS: 1

There are 3 tanks, the factory tank, the tank in the mid bed and the big diamond plate tank, they are pump transfer tanks (not interlinked except by pumping from one tank to the main) plus a urea tank.

Kinja'd!!! "Urambo Tauro" (urambotauro)
