Got home in the snowstorm last night and noticed;

Kinja'd!!!

One of my low beams is out.

That means bulb shopping! So what does Oppo approve/recommend?

Halogen? or HID Projectors?

Make sure whatever you get doesn’t have a blue-tip on the bulb. A blue-tip filters out everything but blue lightwaves. What that means, is that the lights look brighter as you look at the car, but are actually less effective when it comes to lighting up the road.

I usually go with Sylvania Xtra Vision bulbs. I fully expect them not to last as long though.

Halogen preferred, no HID or LED wanted..

It’s a 9003/BH2/H4 for hi/low.

Between Sylvania and PIAA, but there are so many silly names..

I was using Silverstar whatevers on my old car. Huge improvement over stock ‘98 bulbs. Theyd burn out every 4-8 months though. It got to the point where I kept a pack of bulbs and a shorty Philips head in the glove box. I got pulled over and changed a bulb on the spot once. The cop even held a flashlight for me.

And yes I was very careful not to touch the bulb during installation.

So, I JUST researched this extensively because I’m purchasing new bulbs for the cruiser. If you’re keeping with the stock/correct bulb size and model that your headlamps were designed for, there’s a DOT limit on the brightness that can legally be output. If I’m not mistaken, this is a 55w halogen producing 1,000 lumens. Checking the three or four types of bulbs at various pricepoints proved they all output the same amount of lumens but the higher pricepoint bulbs aren’t rated for as many hours.

“Perceived” brightness will vary with the color temperature of the light, hence some of the more expensive bulbs have a cooler or whiter tint.
