Kinja'd!!!

It was in perfect condition, but I’m still not used to what gets antique plates in Virginia vs what got them in California.

I’ll guess a 25 or 30 year rule. These started for MY 1986, which would fit.

I saw a Citation with “collector vehicle” plates several years ago which made me laugh, 30 year rule in WA. Which means now such vintage classics as Camry, Taurus, etc now all easily qualify.

Bad, faded pinstripe? Inappropriate, cheap tires? Missing door trim? Yep, checks out.

It’s 25 years here in TN, so I could plate my ‘91 Civic wagon as an antique now.

25 years. It can be anything as long as you own another vehicle.

CO is 32 years. Getting collector plates on the Cougar means I don’t have to get emission tests. Since it’s a pre-cat car, I never have to. Wee! Had I registered it with regular plates, I’d have to get the air test yearly. The other gotcha is you have to “swear” you’ll drive it less than 4500 miles/yr if you get collector plates.

It’s 25 years in California too, but people tend not to get them unless it basically won’t keep up with traffic. The difference seems to be in the inspection, pre-75 in California means nothing at all. So the advantages are a small amount of money vs. a lot of restrictions.

You can get antique auto license plates IF your vehicle is:

More than 25 years old.

A passenger vehicle OR motorcycle.

Used ONLY for car shows, parades, and similar events. It CAN be used for general transportation on Saturdays and Sundays.

NOT modified from its original engine or body.

The fee for an antique auto plate is $27.75. You CANNOT personalize an antique plate.

Guess my wagovan doesn’t apply then, since I’ve swapped the engine. Also, I don’t want to give up my custom WAGOVAN plate.

Only 20 years in CT, and they have a massive property tax exemption (max value $500 for tax purposes) and no use restrictions. I used to see a beat to death early 80s Ford Escort with them all the time.
