Kinja'd!!!

I remember looking at them online when they were released in 2009, but back then I was a college student and didn’t have the means to get any BMW. For some reason I really liked the 335d, I think I might have to get one of these someday.

Ironically, me car shopping now is much like me car shopping back in college, I don’t really have the means to go out and get a car.

Those wheels O_O

Aren’t they from an M3 GTR or something? I love em so much. Perfect BMW wheels.

Style 359s, I really want to get a set for my M3. I was thinking about getting a set back in 2014, then I received a pretty large pay cut so that didn’t happen. They were originally on the M3 CSL.

The guy who lives in the house behind us traded in his 911 on one of these back when they were new.it was really quick off the line, low-end torque for days. Doesn’t sound sweet, but it’s probably much more practical that the gas powered version.

The BMW uses DEF, actually when they caught VW cheating they were also investigating a diesel BMW X5, which shared the same engine as the 335d. The X5 was returning around what was expected, but the VW was off the charts.

Shit, I need those. I’ve got the money, but I don’t think I can justify spending 1800 on wheels when I don’t have a job, however I might have one as soon as tomorrow, so I might need these.

I really just want it for its combo of excellent fuel economy plus absurd power when you want it. And a part of me just wants to take a chipped 335d to a track day and run down a bunch of 335i’s and the occasional M3.

Just make sure it’s already had a de-carbon service (with likely replacement of the intake manifold and valve cover because they’re plastic and cannot be cleaned deeply without damaging them, and the valve cover is also the lower intake manifold), glow plugs (under the intake, with controller) and injectors (which die regularly and must come out to do the valve cover), lest ye spend many thousands of dollars to do them. Oh, and I’ve seen one break the lower timing chain to the intermediate gear/injection pump drive and smash the valves, no warning.

That’s good to know, I hadn’t heard of these issues, I know it seems the DPF is a problem spot on these cars. I’ll do some more research if I get serious on getting one of these. I already own an out of warranty BMW, I don’t need another money pit.

Kinja'd!!! "RallyWrench" (rndlitebmw)
02/09/2017 at 23:07, STARS: 0

I haven’t seen an M57 need a DPF yet, but have heard of the issue. I’m lumping 2-3 335d’s, 6-7 X5 35d’s, and I think 1 535d that we see together here, btw. The timing chain was a weird one, I didn’t find any evidence that it’s a common problem at all, and that X5 was past 100k. Given BMW’s recent track record with chain guide issues in gas engines it’s worrisome though.

I had one. Luckily it was under a CPO warranty as it was the most unreliable BMW I’ve ever owned. It was in the shop the first month I owned it, then one of the turbos started leaking oil. It was fun to drive, but the X1 I traded it in on is just as fast and gets about the same mpg on account of that ZF8. I do miss dem torques tho.

I currently own a 2009 335d and use it as my daily. I got it CPO with around 45k miles on it and have put 50k on it since (also had like $15k in depreciation in the first year of ownership as the carbon buildup problem started becoming known right after I bought it).

It had carbon buildup issues while under CPO and it took the shop 4 visits before diagnosing and fixing it even though I told them what the issue was on the first visit. I also had an issue with a cracked DEF tank covered under CPO.

After that, its been reliable in the past 30k miles, only regular maintenance needed, but I’m a little leery as I approach 100k miles.

From what I’ve researched, the carbon buildup seems to be more of a problem on cars that are not driven long distance at speeds, so a short commute in the city is worse than a 15 mile commute on the highway.

I have a JBD piggyback tuner on mine and it pulls for days while getting close to 35mpg.

I believe it does exist. I don’t know why it’d be a bad thing, it’s not like VW where they cheated to get around emissions.

Kinja'd!!! "E90M3" (e90m3)
02/10/2017 at 09:26, STARS: 0

How much would have that carbon build up issue been to fix out of pocket?

If I was going to get a 335d, it would be because I would be doing a good amount of highway miles, like 40-60 each day. I’ve also heard that if you don’t drive them hard at times they have either DPF/carbon build up issues, as the higher flow rate through the engine when you up in the rev range helps clear it out. That could be wrong though, but I know if you let a F250 diesel idle all day it’ll produce a lot of smoke when you start driving as it can’t regen the DPF when it’s stationary.

I’ve been looking at them and there are a couple that pop up with over 150k on them, almost be tempted by one of those as long as all the maintenance has been taken care of. Only issue you’d really run into would be things that aren’t covered under normal maintenance like shocks and wheel bearings.

Kinja'd!!! "E90M3" (e90m3)
02/10/2017 at 09:27, STARS: 0

Any idea what the cause of the carbon build up is? I’ve heard if you don’t drive them hard at times it can lead to DPF issues as the higher flow through the DPF at higher RPM helps clear it out.

I think at the time, it would be around $1000-1500 for a cleaning. Not sure if its changed in price any since then, as I haven’t researched. I think some people have tried to DIY it since then also.

As long as it doesn’t have carbon buildup issues when you get it, your commute should be fine. And you’re right that an Italian tune-up does help.

If I don’t get rid of mine (have been going back and forth for two years, just not sure what to replace it with to get the mpgs and torque), and I start throwing codes related to emissions equipment, I will probably take it to http://bimmerperformancecenter.com/bpc-diesel/ and get all the emissions equipment taken out.

Kinja'd!!! "jdrgoat - Ponticrack?" (jdrgoat)
02/14/2017 at 09:35, STARS: 0

Yeah, the high mileage maintenance (mostly just the carbon build-up, right?) would take away from the enjoyment some... but that torque! On my test drive, I stomped on it up to 80mph. I though to myself, “self, that was quick and I don’t know if I need quicker than that.” Then I replied, “self, you sound old saying that!”

I remember how hard it was to find one for sale on autotrader when I was watching the market, optioned how I wanted. M-sport, red white or blue (maybe silver, but I really wanted an actual color which means only red or blue), and no iDrive. Needle in a haystack, I tell ya.

Kinja'd!!! "E90M3" (e90m3)

I would just worry that it would be a really expensive fix and I won’t be making any where near the kind of money I was making before, so a 4k bill turns into a headache where before it was something I’d be like well damn that sucks. So because of that, I don’t think I’m going to get one.

Good luck finding an M-sport with those criteria. Most M-sports I’ve seen have been fully loaded.
