Suggestions on how to fix this? I have some two-part body filler I was going to smear on with a rubber glove then sand down and try using a touch-up-paint-pen to color it in but I’m doubting that will work terribly well

So many little rock chips ;_;

Really looking forward to putting a NB 3 point steering wheel in my car once Spring rolls around.

Nice pics. I don’t think your camera is a Nokia though...

I also have a D3100 and the 35mm DX prime. I have been less than thrilled with both. You’re getting better photos out of t than I have the patience to.

Thanks! Generally when I shoot I’m on full manual, aperture all the way open, iso100, then scrub the shutter speed ‘till the light meters out between the + and - signs and snap snap. 30% of the time it works 100% of the time. The tough part is making sure the part you actually want is in focus at f/1.8 so I usually back out to f/2.5 for stuff like that interior shot so that I don’t have *just* the Mazda logo in focus and everything else bokeh’d.

Yeah the biggest issue I’ve had with it is focus. I realize you have very little depth of field at f/1.8, and I also often shoot it at 2.5 or 2.8, but I’ve still had bad luck getting the focus compared to the Canon Rebel and 50mm f/1.4 I use at work. Anyway TL;DR nice photos, nice car. Keep Oppo Miata.

I’ve got a D5100, but I’ll be switching to a D5300 shortly and I’m looking at getting different/more lenses. The Nikkor 35mm is on my list, as well as the Tokina 11-20mm, and the Sigma or Tamron 17-50mm. I’ve spent more time today reading about lenses than I probably ever have before...

Also this is not lessening my mild want for an NB Miata with a hardtop

Sand out the gouges in the bumper feather out the gouges and use a razor blade to spread the filler into them. You might be able to sand the bumper and get a spray can mixed up of the paint try to match and blend and then clear coat.

Plastic bumper repair can be tricky compared to metal. I only have experience repairing my cracked miata bumper using two part plastic adhesive so it might be a good idea to look up some repair procedures in a miata body repair manual or youtube videos.

Nice pix and of course nice Miata! It’s really great all around - well done.

As far as the little bumper... defects... based on my experience with bondo, I wouldn’t recommend it. Especially for something so small. Maybe I’m just particularly bad with it, but unless you’re at least a little experienced/experimented with it, I wouldn’t bother. But truthfully, I have no idea what you’d do for it. If it was me, I’d just fill it in as best I could with a paint pen.
If you have a local bodyshop, I think it’d be worth bringing in to just get an estimate. I’d imagine it couldn’t be that much, and provided that is true, not having to look at your own imperfect (I won’t say botched) bodywork everyday is probably worth it. Especially on such an otherwise nice car. I speak from experience.

What you’re seeing there *is* with it filled in with a paint pen. I might hit up a bodyshop tomorrow morning depending on how early I wake up.

That’s the trouble— paint doesn’t really fill anything, because even several coats of paint are still pretty darn thin. I find applying paint over blemishes only highlights the defects, rather than hiding.

Those look pretty shallow, so plastic filler might be overkill to fill defects that small. Maybe try some glazing/spot putty, as that is meant for filling pinholes in body filler. The other bonus is that is is one-part, so you don’t have to worry about getting hardener proportions wrong with such a little amount of material.

Sounds like exactly what I woulda said if I knew what I was talking about XD

All I know is that a) bondo sucks and b) it’s especially tough to use on small areas. Like you mentioned, it’s probably mostly from trying to proportion it.
