Kinja'd!!!

So I know I want a manual version if its offered in the model i want.

I know i want something that gets at least 30 MPG combined for a car, exceptions made for the only minivan on the list.

I want to stay as close to my budget of $10,000.00 give or take a $2000 up or down. (Down of course, would be better)

The tsx is on the list, but finding a clean title manual that hasnt been modded is kinda hard. Ive only seen 2 on craigs...

8th gen, only if its a 4 door, not a fan of how the coupe looks.

The thing is, i dont plan on modding it. I would like to leave it as stock looking as possible. All i would do is accessorize it, MAYBE bolt ons, suspension (but not lower it), Tires (but probably not wheels)...

Yeah finding a clean manual TSX is impossible...but hey you never know. a Fiat 500 Abarth is a very nice choice either way

2010 Mini Cooper S has the N14 engine which is known to eat its timing chain tensioner...Just a fair warning.

Other than that it looks like a great list!

Nothing wrong with the Prius. It is a reliable car that gets great mileage.

Even though it’s automatic-only, the 09+ TSX wagon might be reachable in your budget.

You should also consider the Mazda 5. Better mileage and more fun than the Ody, and a manual transmission available. Plus, the Ody’s transmission SUCKS!

The Fit and Prius are the only cars on your list that meet your own 30 mpg requirement.

First gen Toyota Prius is good as a cheap commuter. Gets like 45-50 mpg. Kinda loud and not super comfortable, but it’ll also keep running forever and the second hand batteries are common and cheap.

Source: Have one.

You’ve covered everything sensible in your list, I’d learn towards the Mini because I like them better than your other options. Now for the absurd suggestion 2 Porsche 944 Turbos, you should be able to pick them up for 5-6k a piece. Hopefully one of them will start most days.

EPA mileage for each of those:

500 Abarth: 28/33, 30 combined

500 Turbo: 28/33, 30 combined

Mini Cooper S JCW: 25/33, 28 combined, so this is disqualified

Fit: 27/33, 29 combined, so this is disqualified

TSX: 19/28, 22 combined, so this is disqualified

S2000: 17/23 to 18/25, 20 to 21 combined, so this is disqualified

Mazdaspeed Miata: 18/24, 20 combined, so this is disqualified

Prelude: 20/25, 22 combined, so this is disqualified

Prius: The worst is the Gen 1, at 42/41, 41 combined.

Also, all of these except for the Fit and Prius (and the Odyssey) take premium.

However, the refurbished batteries for Gen 1s and 2s are going down in quality a lot lately, as all the source cells are getting old and worn out.

There’s still the Toyota batteries, though.

Here’s a question, what do you actually want out of a car?

Most of your list is fairly sporty, but then you’ve got the Odyssey and the Prius on the list...

Kinja'd!!! "LightweightSasquatch" (lightweightsasquatch)
02/09/2017 at 19:40, STARS: 0

From what I gather it is fairly random. Basically it is a plastic guide that basically gives up and lets the chain do what it wants and that allows certain bits to touch other bits that are not suppose to touch and then the car needs a new engine. Quick search on any mini forum should return results!

And also, if you like the TSX, you’ll also like the regular US Accord from that era. Lighter, more room, and better mpg vs the Euro Accord/TSX. Plus, you can use regular instead of premium.

The Echo, xA, xD, and Yaris are all good choices, too.

You can also get a brand new Mirage within budget, too.

ah i gotcha. odd that the chain guide was totally plastic rather than plastic lined aluminum like in some toyota celica motors, but hey, everyones cheapin out these days right?

The Del Sol wasn’t that bad of car I helped a buddy rebuild one for his wife they are surprisingly high quality and you only need a 10,11 and 12 mm socket to take the whole car apart.

Small, economical, fun, a touch on the rarer side but not so rare that parts are expensive, great mpgs, reliable, fairly well equipped or inexpensive enough so that i have extra money to equip it well, manual option unless it was only made in auto, bluetooth connectivity... thats why the top three is the way it is...

the mini van was because i have a large and close extended family and also in preparation for a possible future with the GF. I wanna make a life with her, and she has already expressed she like me, wants 2 kids, maybe possibly 3 in the future. My gf thinks it would be hot if i drove a minivan, but warned me no woman would ever hit on me after that. Im also intrigued by “Vankulture” LOL but i probably wouldnt go that route, or go full VK at least. Ive always liked 2nd and 3rd gen odysseys and im starting to love the new siennas but they are out of my price range

The TSX is on there because i love how the 1st gen looks, its practical with 4 doors and is only slightly smaller than her 2015 TLX which felt as big as my 99 3.5RL. Also, it has the 2.4L 4cyl motor that is pretty reliable and decent on gas.

The prius option is on there because lets face it, 4 doors, good on gas and practical as all heck, but i’m not fooling myself into thinking its going to be fun or enjoyable driving it HAHA

Well the plastic doesn’t seem to be the issue. They moved the the N18 engine in 2011 (2012 for JCW) which using roughly the same plastic guide but they changed some other designs and the N18 seems to not have the issue.

most civics 2000 and older are that way, surprisingly well built

I used to have a 99 civic si... I do miss that thing sometimes. but i did a lot of wrenching on it, only to have it totalled by an off duty cop who ran a red light...

ive thought about those cars, but recall driving an xA and a yaris... not much fun, but they are on the extended list along with an IQ if i can find one LOL, not in my top 10, but more on my extended list.

Im not a fan of the accords from the era just because they are too common and look too much like appliances. but the newer era accords are pretty hot...

You know, if you’re seriously considering a Prius, the 2010 Lexus HS 250h should be getting down around the $10,000 mark. If you want the Hybrid tech for the gas mileage, there’s no reason to have to deal with the sub-par interior of a Prius.

I actually quite like driving my Gen 4 Prius, but that’s not going to be anywhere near your price range, and I’m not a fan of the previous generations as far as fun to drive goes, at least having driven a couple stock Gen 3s (for particularly efficient appliances, they’re good, yes, but they’re appliances). Toyota did a lot to make the Gen 4 better to drive - independent rear suspension, much faster steering rack, better steering (that is, not ludicrously overboosted, there’s actually some feel to it) and suspension tuning, etc., etc.

There is a sizable aftermarket, though (some of it supplied by Toyota), for the Gen 2 and 3 Priuses, as far as suspension (to be fair, they share suspension with a lot of other Toyotas) and chassis stiffening bits, to improve that. Gen 2s still have a ludicrously slow steering rack, no matter what you do, though, and Gen 3s are still pretty slow steering unless you get one that came with 17" wheels. (I’d aim for Gen 3 if you go Prius. That said, there’s been a tiny part of me that’s wanted to see if a Gen 2 could be made into a warm hatch. Pistons and camshafts from a Yaris (hurts efficiency, but adds about 30 hp or so, and Toyota’s done it themselves in racing Prii), full suspension and chassis stiffening, find a steering rack that’s faster and fits (maybe de-power a Scion tC rack or something), etc., etc.)

Someone else suggested the Lexus CT 200h, which is 100 mm shorter wheelbase (it’s based on the European-market Auris hatchback, which we now know as the Corolla iM), but has a nicer interior and an independent rear suspension. Similarly, the HS 250h is based on the larger Avensis sedan (same platform as both the Prius and CT, same wheelbase as the Prius), with a nicer interior, a larger engine (2.4 liter - it’s basically the 2007-2011 Camry Hybrid’s powertrain), and an independent rear suspension.

The Prius c is smaller, and I hear more nimble than the Gen 3 Prius (quick steering, too), but it’s also the cheap Prius, in the worst sense of the word - as in, “wow, they still sell cars with interiors that shitty in 2017?” cheap. That said, you can get one in orange, and I approve of orange cars.

Really, though, I don’t know that you’ll be happy with any of those. Test drive them, but they might not fit what you want.

The Mazda5 doesn’t hit your mileage goal (22/28 and 24 combined for the 2.3 5-speed, 21/28 and 24 combined for the 2.5 6-speed), but will be more fun to drive than the Odyssey (probably more fun to drive than an older Prius, too), it’ll have three rows if you need them, and it’ll likely satisfy your girlfriend’s van fetish. Then again, if you insist on hitting the fuel economy goal in a van-ish form factor, and don’t actually need the third row, there’s the Prius v, which is a long wheelbase tall Gen 3 Prius.

I have a friend who used to work at FCA (they make the 500s for America like 45 minutes away from me in Mexico) when I said I wanted one, he told me they are incredibly, eye-wateringly unreliable and to avoid them like the plague, specially without warranty.

So I pass on this knowledge to you so you don’t make a mistake.
