Kinja'd!!!

So, aside from going to the Chicago Auto Show tomorrow, I have a weekend project with Tucker.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Anyway, you may remember that I put an extra quart (maybe quart and a half) into Tucker which immediately after caused some misfiring and reduced power issues.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

I solved the issue by with getting more petrol of the correct octane... or did I?

You see, I haven’t been driving Tucker pretty much at all since that above thread, so outside of the two drives I used to give Tucker a clean bill of health, he hasn’t really driven enough miles for me to confidently say he was fixed.

Over the past week, he has been misfiring quite a bit...and when he wasn’t misfiring, he had about as much power as a moped.

This made me reevaluate the situation. Why would the car operate worse after I put more oil in? Oh...

While I may have said that the dipstick is woefully unreliable, it’s never wronged me before , so honestly I probably shouldn’t have second guessed it.

Looking at the dipstick, there’s so much oil on it I can’t even tell where the full line even was.

If true, this means Tucker is driving 1.5 qts over capacity on oil. *Sigh* While this car probably can’t be killed, I’m certainly not doing it any favours. This is why I probably shouldn’t be trusted with machinery. :(

So this weekend I’m going to do a bit of a tear down and figure out what I did wrong. The car was working 100% fine for 5,000 miles after the original event. It’s only started these shenanigans after I started further tweaking it. Assuming I don’t figure out how to fully kill the car, I’m replacing that oil pan this weekend too.

Have you ever considered a 1993 Corolla wagon?

That seems oddly specific. :P

I hope he’s okay! I drove my S10 2.5 quarts low on oil for about 1,500 miles (oops) and it’s no worse for the wear. Hopefully Tucker is good, too!

If a fire won’t kill him, I hope too much oil won’t. And if it does, well I’m going to learn how to do an engine swap!

Ugh, it’s when I do things like this that makes me question my entire existence. I hope it’s effectively a lesson learned kind of deal and not worse. :o

We all make mistakes! I have a truck that I know burns some oil (172,000 mile GM 4.3s will do that) and I neglected to check its oil level for almost 2,000 miles! I felt so dumb at first, but then I remembered how the average American treats their vehicle and realized I was one leg up by even bothering to check the oil at all.

Not to mention the 4 or 5 times I’ve nicked, dinged, or scratched Sylvia in the year I’ve owned her. We’ve all been there, friend!

It will probably be fine, but avoid running it with that much oil as much as possible. Low load (idling) with 1.5 qt on such a small displacement engine is a recipe for oil aeration which can cause some major damage.

Just drain the extra oil out, check for any metal shavings, and if you don’t see anything it’s probably completely fine.

Thanks for reassuring me. This week’s been a bad emotional week and my brain is just looking for reasons to say “HA! I WAS RIGHT SUCKER!!!” while my girlfriend is being an awesome therapist in her own way.

I’m going to wash all of this out of my system tomorrow and look at some cool cars at CAS tomorrow. :)

That’s the problem with the Mitsubishi mill, I guess.

Don’t remind me. lol *grumbles* No coolant temp gauges, pretty much all the sensors won’t indicate an issue until after the engine is dead, the manual deems “operating temperature” to be anything up to 10 degrees before the engine starts to melt, and other weird stuff.

At least it’s an improvement over the 1st generation engine, those things needed frequent rebuilds. lol

Before committing to replacing the oil pan you might want to make sure everything is ok. Just drain a little oil out and see what happens. There’s a couple 10mm bolts that hold some hoses down that are a pain to access. Not a fun job, probably not far from “son of a gosh dern mother loving female dog this is borderline effing impossible” without a lift. But more R rated.

I drained some oil last night. It’s a deep brown, but otherwise looks and smells like normal oil. Going to check the service flap and see if any coolant disappeared though.

Don’t feel to bad, one of my friends was doing an oil change at the shop, he changed the filter, added the 4 quarts, made it a few miles before the car started massively smoking. Turns out he forgot to drain the oil and he had roughly 8-9 quarts of oil in a car designed for 4-5.
