Watching the American Experience documentary on the Oklahoma City Bombing (you should check it out , it’s fascinating) and I hit pause at just the right moment.

Who remembers this guy?

I got most of the way through the episode and it was so well done I just made me mad and sad at the same time. No doubt the feds totally fucked up both Ruby Ridge and Waco, but that’s no excuse for hording illegal weapons and bombing innocent civilians.

The Original Day Time Talk Show.

I remember he was the show to to a special on AIDS back in 1983 or so. I distinctly remember a gay guy saying, “this is NOT going to be solely a gay lifestyle issue for much longer. I hope everyone is prepared for it.”

Phil was good stuff.

Phil Donahue is still kickin’

I’m half way through the doc. As always, great stuff from PBS.

I was 11 when it happened so I remember it, but not in much detail. Watching this documentary now, at age 33, with a 3-year-old son, is gut-wrenching. The portion where they talk about the children who were in the daycare center is almost unbearable to watch.

Having lived in Dayton and grown up in the Dayton media market, I can’t not recognize Phil Donahue.

McVeigh didn’t give a crap about other people. His whole world was wrapped up in his personal problems. He knew there was a daycare in the building and blew it up anyway. He wanted to take down the building with everyone inside. He knew there would be lots of collateral damage and he did not care.

My mom was working in downtown Okc when it happened. Her building was 1/4 a mile away (line of sight) on the south side of the Murray building (the bomb was set off on the north side of the building). The bomb blew many of the windows out of her building and many of the cars on the upper parking deck on the east side of her building were impaled by shards of glass. The concussion wave tweaked the body of her car so badly that the doors and trunk never sealed properly again.

She was lucky. Many more people were killed or injured in the bombing than were affected in Waco or Ruby Ridge. If he wanted to make a statement, he could have done it on a Sunday morning and just taken down the building. Instead, he went in with the intention of killing as many people as possible. Bastard.

I agree. Bastard, indeed. The 20th anniversary was about a month after my son turned one. This is what I thought at that time: http://cigarlounge.kinja.com/i-hope-timothy-mcveigh-is-burning-in-the-deepest-depths-1699059867

Just watched this. I was a senior in high school and home that day along w my parents who were splitting up and it was my first boyfriend’s bday. We just all sat and watched horrified. I was just struck by how the white supremacist movement aspect of it. But Donohue is the GOAT of talk shows.
