Friend of a friend is selling. By all accounts, a very nice car, but... salvage title. $14.5k is the ask.

If I went this way, I’d pay cash, and I do tend to keep my cars for many years and put on miles, so resale is less of a concern.

Would likely become my primary track & backroadtrip car, with use on nice days as a daily as well (when I don’t need more seats).

It’s a salvaged AP1 that’s been “completely converted” to an AP2, if I’m getting the info correct. I’m calling CP. Not just for the title, but the fact that you can’t really trust the integrity of the mechanical work done to it. That’s a $9,000 car at best, which is what normal salvaged AP1s go for around here, so I’m being generous with my estimate.

Depends if my insurance covers it...cause that hard top alone is worth $$$.

Salvage title S2000 with home-brew AP2 conversion? Fuuuuuuck that.

I’d say CP. AP2 S2K’s go for good money, but this is an AP1 that’s been swapped to AP2 plus a salvage title. Hardtop is a plus though. I’d say $11k because it has the hardtop.

I’d also tear into that car before I even show cash

Haha! That’s a pretty clear opinion.

Thanks for the input. I think he might actually be a mechanic, but definitely reason for caution. The price, miles & condition (and hardtop) sure are tempting, though. Unfortunately not a local car - it’s a few hours away.

And they’re also conversions that probably weren’t even required. I can see if the engine was hydrolocked, and he had an AP2 engine to put into it. But I’m assuming that the AP2 “conversion” was for fun?

If it was salvaged due to theft (w no body damage), maybe they pulled and sold the motor? No idea.

The people you should trust the LEAST are “mechanics” who are trying to sell you a car.

The “mechanic” who rebuilt the EJ20 in my old WRX forgot to put an oil plug back into the head, resulting in the engine spewing oil everywhere. I barely made it to the mechanic before the entire engine seized up. Be very wary of “mechanics” trying to sell you their cars.

I get that, but this is a friend of a friend who has driven this car for some time after the conversion and is now trying to sell it to his group of friends (who largely also have S2ks). If it was a basket case, or poorly done, he’d be offloading it elsewhere.
