Bring on the robot cars!!!

While coming down the merge ramp from Ben White to I35, a blue Civic began trying to cut in front of me a good 500 feet before the merge lane began. He literally shoved himself into the non-existent gap, forcing me to brake hard.

This caused the woman in the Tahoe behind me to angrily pull onto the shoulder and pass us. Meanwhile, a water truck saw an opportunity to merge early due to the Civic coming to a complete stop to force me to let him in. The Tahoe saw the same gap. They crashed at maybe 10 MPH.

The blue Civic decided to avoid the crash and pulled onto the shoulder to pass at the exact moment a woman in a black Porsche Boxster was FLYING down the shoulder, passing everyone. They crash. A much bigger crash.

Seeing the two crashes, a car behind me on the ramp tries to move from the ramp onto I35, again a good 500 feet before the merge lane even begins. I guess he’s watching what’s happening with the crash because he pulls out directly in front of a semi, causing a THIRD crash.

So now the ramp is completely blocked because all of the crashes were prior to the merge lane, and there’s no way to even detour around it because the right lane of I35 is blocked by the third crash.

I can’t wait to read how this was handled by APD. People are too stupid to drive.

Pretty nice view of downtown Austin from those flyovers though...

Holy crap.

At least you managed to stay out of the carnage. I think the biggest current issue is the turnstile known as the DMV. It’s way too easy to get a license, and that low bar leads directly to stupid maneuvers.

From your perspective there are at least 4 drivers there that need some proper education on driving.

I swear half the people in Texas are terrible drivers that do not understand the concept of passing or speed limits.

I’m all for self driving cars, they should theoretically make traffic obsolete.

Please tell me you caught most of this on a dash cam?

Well even with a strong test, the fact we never retest makes it easy for people to develop horrible habits.

Also, getting my Texas license was a pain in the ass (not because of the test, which I didn’t have to take, since I had a NY license, but just because of the usual bureaucratic bullshit over documents).

Woman in the Boxster should receive a 5-figure fine. Shoulder driving like that is reprehensible. At the same time, Civic guy deserved what he got, along with the one who merged in front of the semi.

“So now the ramp is completely blocked” Reminded me of this great situation I saw on facebook:

How did 3 cars end up so perfectly blocking the road?

If only... I could have a blog that was nothing but video of the Asshat of the Day on Austin Roads. I’d call it Double Dumbass On You.

By the way, this is more or less the same spot where I saw a guy pull onto the shoulder to pass traffic and immediately hit a police motorcycle that had pulled over to remove some debris. The cop was maybe 20 feet in front of the bike so he wasn’t hurt, but the look on his face was indescribably hilarious.

No one in Texas knows how to drive on the highways. Honestly, they’re the best designed highways I’ve ever been on. I love the parallel roads and the on and off ramps, but someone needs to teach those idiots how to merge. No you can’t merge on a 70 mph highway doing 45.

Had a little rant a while ago about TX drivers:

Thanks; that helps. Yep, that’s what I thought you were talking about. I’ve seen close calls thanks to that kind of nonsense too often.

It’s like they’re all panicking that they’re going to get stuck in the turn-only lane. I guess it’s good that they’re thinking ahead, but they need to think the whole thing through and stop making things worse for everybody.

If everyone on our roads was a visitor and had no experience with the traffic patterns and physical roadways, I’d understand the daily clusterfuck. But driving this route almost every day, I know that in less than 1,000 feet I’ll be able to safely and easily merge into moving traffic. Then I move over to the middle lane to avoid the bottleneck caused by traffic merging from the frontage road after Oltorf, then move back over to the right to exit at Holly Street and avoid the bottleneck at the traffic light at Cesar Chavez caused by the ramp exiting 100 feet before a long traffic light. I mean seriously, pay attention, plan ahead, and you can make your commute far easier, faster, and safer. So I maintain my assertion that most people simply have no concept of how to safely operate a motor vehicle. It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so dangerous and frustrating.

I didn’t figure that reply would stay up there for long. You Texans don’t handle blunt honesty very well. Perhaps I should have thrown ‘bless your heart’ in there somewhere.
