Awesome. You do realize there’s two Dutch pictures up there, right? That second one (3rd picture) is even a real Bambino (the first one probably as well)!

I knew the guy loading his saxophone, or whatever that is, has a Bambino, but I wasn’t sure about the top one. It does look like a Dutch location. They couldn’t have sold many Bambinos, so I was thinking they might be the same car, but the marker lights in back are different which is interesting. I wonder if either of those cars still exist. We may have to search for them when I’m there. Is there a Bambino in the Louwman, or do they only have a Fulda?

Have we ever talked about the Shelter, your country’s homegrown microcar?

Kinja'd!!!

02/09/2017 at 18:37, STARS: 1

The Louwman one I’ve shown before I think, that one is a 1955 Bambino 200. Dutch registration is on a car so it probably isn’t the same car with it’s differing license plates. Is there a date set for your trip already? Does Emily join in on the euro-fun as well?

Shelter? NO WE HAVEN’T!!!! There’s two known to have survived. And AutoCult made a 1/43 of the Shelter!!!

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!! "Jonee" (Jonee)
02/09/2017 at 20:31, STARS: 1

Yeah, you’ve shown me your picture of the Louwman car. I couldn’t remember if it was a Bambino. Maybe it’s one of these Bambinos. The guy with the case looks like a production photo, so I was thinking that could have been a mockup plate. We’re thinking late May for the trip. I haven’t asked Emily if she’d like to come, but I’ll mention it. Many Bones fans over there?

I always thought only 1 Shelter remained. Did they find another? I think they only built 5. I would love to see one in person. Do you know where they are? The first Shelter was part DC-9 fuel tank, or something. You need one of those 1/43's. It’s one of The Netherlands’ national automobile treasures.

Kinja'd!!! "Jobjoris" (Jobjoris)
02/10/2017 at 04:07, STARS: 1

A mockup to show just how many cars they already made, marketing in the ‘50's! Could be. There’s always room for Emily here, just tell her there aren’t Bones fans here, just Emily fans. And Zooey.

Two of the 5, 6, 7 or 20 (it’s not completely clear how many actually were made, 6 is the most likely if you ask me) made Shelters are known to have survived. One of those remains in the hands of Erik and Arnold van der Goot, sons of the founder of the Shelter car company. So I can get you to see that one probably, just some detective work. I know the name of the owner of the other one: Sjoerd ter Burg.

Kinja'd!!! "Jonee" (Jonee)
02/12/2017 at 22:36, STARS: 1

Where on the plate does it show how many cars they made? I forget now what the total number of Bambinos was. Not that many. I don’t think she cares about the Zooey fans.

My encyclopedia says 7, but that parts for 20 were made. So, I can see why the actual number of finished cars is debatable. I thought one was still in van der Goot’s possession. Who is this Sjoerd character? We should do a Shelter post some day. van der Goot seems like he was probably an interesting guy. He designed everything on the car. Nothing off the shelf which is unusual for a microcar.

02/13/2017 at 03:17, STARS: 1

No idea. It all collapsed just after they started as Fuldamobil themselves were filing for bankruptcy. And the era of the dwergauto was over anyway. Should have made the Sport though.

Kinja'd!!!

My sources state “5 produced, and with the spare parts leftover one or two were finished after the company already stopped production”. It is an interesting story. I’ll have to find that AutoCult 1/43. That Sjoerd guy is a Dwergauto guru, known character in the Messerschmitt world IIRC. There’s a roadtest of the Shelter in September 58's AutoKampioen. In which the author already feels the Shelter is outdated ;-)

When did the Bambino go into production? ‘55? ‘57? 1955 was the heart of the microcar boom, but a couple years later things had dropped off. Still, Fuldamobil came out with the fiberglass car like I have and kept building those until ‘69. Did they only build the one Sport? I’ve never been 100% certain if it technically did go on sale. It should have been a rousing success by the look of it. It just wasn’t particularly sporty in the performance department.

It was originally supposed to be a car you’d lease from the government, I think. So, I wonder if and how the cars that were built were sold and who the heck bought them especially those 2 extra ones. That reminds me of how they built a couple Kleinschnittgers from extra parts a couple years after that factory shut down for some guy in America of all places. For 1958, the Shelter was a pretty primitive car. But, it looks like it would be a terrific city car. You can park it in any crevice. We may have to find Mr. ter Berg. I think I may have heard of him. He wrote something for the Microcar, or Messerschmitt club, I believe.

02/13/2017 at 05:22, STARS: 1

“In production”... At first the Fuldamobil was simply imported by the Rotterdam company “Hostaco” and put to market as the Bambino . Production in Veghel took off later on as that made it more profitable. The Sport was on our local car fair, the Auto Rai , in 1957. With the biggest complaint being it wasn’t, well you said it your self, exactly sporty...

That lease construction I knew, not sure it was you’d actually get it from the government. The government was backing this project but eventually bailed out. That was the end of Shelter IIRC. I’ll find mr. ter Berg and the Van der Goot family before your arrival in May!

Kinja'd!!! "Jonee" (Jonee)
02/14/2017 at 00:56, STARS: 1

Bambino “production” was probably mostly assembly. I think those bodies could only be made in Germany because of that aluminum molding process. But, maybe they sent tooling to The Netherlands. Also, that giant baby head on display at the show couldn’t have helped.

Yeah, that’d be something to see a Shelter in person and talk to Van der Goot. Were those cars that were built bought, or leased? Would have been a short lease, I guess. I wonder how much it cost to lease a Shelter. Couldn’t have been more than a few Guilders. ter Berg must have an interesting collection. Unless it’s just a Shelter and some Messerschmitts. Messerschmitts are a dime a dozen.

Haha, that promo sign was wicked! Then again: The entire name was beyond weird. It was small alright but thinking that would help the sales a bit?

I have no idea, I’d really have to read up about Shelters. It will be my life mission to get you to the Van der Goots! And that Shelter.

Kinja'd!!! "Jonee" (Jonee)
02/15/2017 at 23:49, STARS: 1

I could see that name working in America. Babe Ruth, our most famous baseball player, was nicknamed “The Bambino.” There was a French microcar called the Rolux Baby. Sometimes called the Baby Junior, which is pretty redundant.

Kinja'd!!!

We’ll have to get Van der Goot to give us the whole story then. Maybe we can make video post with an interview and a drive, if it actually does drive. Oh, look, it does. Although, I’m not sure which Shelter this is.

Speaking of, I found you a Fuldamobil.

Babe wasn’t exactly small was he, was that just based on his “Babe” name?

I’ll just contact the Dwergauto club I’ve talked with before regarding the De Rovins, sure they’ll help us out. That Shelter piece will be written/shot.

Lovely Fulda! Just not sure if $10k is a bit much for it in this state? You really think it’s worth that?

He was a bit rotund, yeah. Bambino came from “Babe,” so it was a nickname for a nickname.

Kinja'd!!!

I think now Americans think “bambino” means big guy who can hit baseballs.

Awesome. That’ll be fun.

It’s probably a little high, yeah. I can see 8 grand tops since it does run and drive apparently.

02/17/2017 at 05:11, STARS: 1

Haha, “rotund”, that’s a first. Haven’t heard that word a lot! How on earth could he run on that field?

I’m sure your POTUS feels Bambino means Big Guy. Good thing he’s using the world’s best lawyers now to come up with a new law regarding the muslim travel ban. What a hero. The press is nuts. Only liars. Fake news.

I showed you that Biscuter. There’s more in that auction... Still would prefer a Fuldamobil though!

Well, he hit a lot of home runs, so he only had to jog around the bases. He loved the ladies, too. Unfortunately, he apparently loved hot dogs just as much. He’s the real American dream. Ate and screwed whatever he wanted and people still adored him.

The only news you should believe is what comes out of his mouth, he said. Just like respected leaders like Idi Amin.

Wow, a Mochet Model K. That’s in great shape, too. I wonder if that’s the original top. It looks amazing. I also love this entry:

This is a good auction, too. A couple R7's and an R5 in my livery.

That green Siete!!!! I better stop looking at this auction...

The Sweden thing is ridiculous. It’s because he’s watching Fox News and he believes everything he sees. And, why the hell is the watching t.v. news? He IS the news. Which I guess explains why he watches it. But, he’s supposed to listen to his advisors, not people on television.

I know. We should each buy a Siete. I found something else I have fallen in love with.
