Kinja'd!!!

After seeing my list I posted the other day, my day called it a pansy list. His exact words. Is trying to talk me into getting “a real mans car” (his words again). I clapped back with “this from a man that daily drives a Boxster?” But anyway, a 2006 Chrysler 300 SRT with just over 100 thousand on the odo for $12,700. Its tempting but its an 06. Should that matter?

Getting harder to find them with low miles and without shitty mods.

I’d be a bit concerned about reliability.

Good power and badass looks. This are admirable qualities, but they are basically the only pluses of one of these. It’s cool and fast in a straight line. Everything else falls somewhere on the spectrum of “meh” to “ew”.

I like them, but I’d never want to own one.

Try the sedan, no one mods or drives them.

Its pretty much like the Challenger is today. Like I always say, they are old school in the best and worst sense: fast, but only in a straight line.

My dad had a 2005 300C get to 193k before dropping a valve seat. I don’t know if the SRT was susceptible to that like the C was, but my dad’s car was really reliable until it catastrophically wasn’t.

Decent price, only a handful of minor things to addess for durability, but I would say NP for the amount of car you get for that little money.

Is it super refined like an E Class? No. But an E63 wont get away from it that easily. The SRT8s were ballpark around 410hp, and 420ft-lb of torque. Trans is stout and extremely durable. Rear differential is also very stout. Axles are a different story for that generation, but being an SRT, its much easier to replace them with newer much more durable axles.

Interior is pretty nice, but there will be a lot of plastic. There are things I would look past and live with to DD a 300 SRT, and the plastic interior is one of those things.

Motors are very reliable, only thing on the 6.1s that I would take a bigger look is the timing chain and guides. Rest of the motor should take 200k without skipping a beat. The 5.7 is not the same, those earlier ones drop valve seats way too easily until late 06, early 07.

The price is very reasonable for an SRT, and most people wouldnt think twice about what it really is.

Could just be the 5.7 problem.

So pretty much it should be bulletproof and not worry about the year. I have loved these since I was a teen and this price is tempting. Cant beat the power and the room. You have to pay way more to get the room and power this offers.

The axles are the weak point, a few hard launches that hook will destroy the axles. They split at the hub, they crack halfway down the shaft, the early axles are hollow and not durable.

09+ axles are totally redesigned, and those are what I have. Completely worth the upgrade if you want to do the occasional hard launch.

Bulletproof? You’ll have a lot of bushings that need replacing, there will be plenty of little things that need addressing, but if you want the car, its a reasonable investment if youre willing to put in the TLC.

I really do not like the rental car look of the older models, especially when talking about the interior. I have had the chance to review a 2013 SRT8 and they are so much nicer on the inside. And they look better on the outside as well. Obliglatory self promotion here:

However, the 6.1 pulls like a freight train. A very nice motor. The 6.4 is just a bit better in that department though...

The axle thing is a big one to me but I wouldn’t be doing any hard launches, though tempting. I figured it would be typical last decade, pre bailout Chrysler problems, especially with that Playskool plastic interior.

The thing I didn’t care about with the first gen 300's was the fact that across all models it wasn’t the same car. The base cars and Limited models had different head and tail lights than the Hemi models which I thought was dumb. The interior too is pretty much Daimler Chrysler era crap with the hard plastics.

Nice review though. I would love that gen of SRT8 though the cheapest I could find is 24 and that’s with 90 thousand on the odo. Interior and exterior are worlds better though, especially if you got the panoramic roof.

Since the 300 was marketed as a luxury sedan, the fit and finish is overall better than the other LX cars, but still mostly plastic.

I really like the 300 and think it would be a great option for a DD, but unless you know the cars really well, have another car you can use. The suspension is very complicated and time consuming to work on.

The aftermarket for the LX platform is massive, but its not cheap by any means for some things.

I’m glad JGrabowMSt posted up as well.

I have a ‘06 Magnum SRT8, 65k miles on the clock and its been flawless. Been to the drag strip twice, down Rt. 66 and back for a total of 6500 miles in two weeks, countless other small road trips around MI, hasn’t skipped a beat. Corsa exhaust sounds amazing on it (though the stock 6.4's still sound better), got an average of 21 mpg on the Rt. 66 road trip, 17 daily use with a mix of street and highway. Engine and trans are perfect, just don’t expect quick response on the autostick shifts or rev-matched downshifts. Interior is plasticy for sure, but still a nice place to be in. And those seats.....my god the seats are awesome for miles and hours at a time. I’ve had mine for 6 years now and 30k miles, no complaints. For a fun DD or summer only car, you really can’t beat it.

I love the Magnum SRT8. I have since I was a kid. Even more so than he 300. They are getting harder to find though as the years go on because everyone who wanted one bought them and kept them and from what you are saying they are worth driving till the wheels fall off.

Chrysler quality though...especially 10 years old and over 100,000 miles. Hard pass.

Yup, that and they only ever made about 3300 over 3 years. If you can pull the trigger on the 300, you’ll love it.
