Is there anywhere you can buy one of these? Dailying one with street tires would be SO cool.

Supermoto Dakar bike.....

There’s a Cagiva Grand Canyon on my local CL that I now want to buy and make look like an Elefant. Also, Russell motorsports built a Ducati scrambler that gives me a Elefant vibe.

Many elefants in Europe have been supermoto’d.. Here’s one that a guy on one of the boards was recently parting with....

Kinja'd!!!

Regarding buying one, they come up for sale every now and then.. but there’s so few in world at this point (and VERY few in N. America..) that it’s rare to come by one... If you’re seriously looking for one let me know.. most of them pass from one Mahout (elephant rider) to another via the chat boards, and I can keep an eye out for you....

Great, now I want to buy the Cagiva Grand Canyon that’s on my local CL and use it as a camping bike. THANKS BOB!

I’m guessing these go for a little bit of a premium, I don’t really know anything about them. I’m also still in school and living just north of Toronto I’d only really buy something I can use all year (unless I put off road tires on for the winter.....) Do you think they would be ok as a first bike?

BUY THE GRAN CANYON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was looking for an elefant for years, couldn’t find one, so bought a Gran Canyon I came across a few years back. 100% BRILLIANT bike and they’re dirt cheap cuz nobody has ever heard of them. BUY IT! SERIOUSLY! The fuel injected Duc 900 in it, fitted with dual exhaust, is AMAZING!!!!!!

I still miss mine.. even with an ‘fant in the garage...

They really don’t go for a premium actually.... That blue super moto’d one, I doubt he’ll get more $4500 for it...

I bought mine for $2500 (sans motor) and then found a $900 motor to put in it.... But not bad for a 400lbs, 95hp dirtbike for less than $3500.....

How big is the motor? It would be cool to own something unique like that here, definitely would be an interesting way to get started on biking. And those prices are definitely reasonable. But a bike will most likely be a second mode of transportation for me.

It’s tempting. Plus I’m in AZ, so I should probably own something called a Grand Canyon. It’s listed for $3,650 with a new seat cover and tires. 33k miles. Now, should I ask my wife, or just show up with it and pretend we talked about it...

The elefants came in two flavors: a 750cc and 900cc.. The vast majority are 900's. And it’s generally accepted that the 900 is the better motor (there’s very little difference weight-wise between the two motors, but there is a significant power difference..)

The only issue with elefants is that you’re dealing with an Italian machine that’s been out of production for over 20 years.... The ducati 900 2v motors are pretty ubiquitous so no worries getting mechanical parts.. But other components take some searching for, but for the most part, the community has figured out what works... for example, you can use the fork seals from 93-97 Honda CR250's etc.. The only issue is the body panels... they’re kinda becoming unobtanium.

Regarding a first bike, I think they’d be a poor choice. And not cuz they’re too fast for a beginner or whatever. But because when you start messing with motorcycles, you’re going to drop it while moving it in the garage, lay it down in parking lot gravel at 5 mph, set the kickstand on soft dirt and come back in an hour to find the bike on it’s side... etc, etc.... simple beginner mistakes that every bike owner has/will deal with..

And it would be better to learn those lessons with a less rare bike....

OH! You’re in AZ... I keep forgetting that... Jeez man.... you need a GC!

Although.. the GC’s speedo is in KM, is the 33k miles or km’s?? If it’s 33000 km’s that’s a pretty good price. If it’s 33000 miles, the price could come down a bit....... but still, that’s quibbling when considering it’s a 900cc adv bike (that sounds sooo good) for less than $4k. For reference, I got mine for about $3500 with only 17,000 miles on it....

But seriously, at the very least go take a look at it.. and like I said, just listen to it rev....

Ducati motors....

Yeah I see what you mean though, idk if I’d ever own one realistically speaking but they are quite unique and cool. Thanks for the info, nice to have these on my radar now lol.

That was a quick and dirty miles conversion. Speedo reads around 55k km. I’ll offer him $3k and see what he says. Bikes hold value pretty well here on account of us having a 12 month riding season. My buddy has been trying to get me to buy a Ducati and do some touring with his dad and a bunch of Ducati old timers. This might suffice.

Yeah... I actually went and found the ad in question on CL... even with 33k miles... not a bad deal at all. And judging from the pics, it looks like it was well cared for...

And Cagiva’s are fun around ducati guys because most of them scratch their heads with a “wtf?” expression when they see them... If I had a dollar for every time a Ducatista asked me what kind of Ducati my bike is... I could have bought a couple more cagivas....

Another fun fact about the Gran Canyons is that they were actually built by Ducati in the same factory where they build Monsters... they really are just a 900cc Monster set up for off road hoonage...

Edited to add: “ suffice ”??? dude... you wait.. every one of those ducati guys are gonna be fucking jelly at the sound as well as the dirt roosting that thing can do!

These guys are old and don’t care what bike you take. I meant “suffice” as in it would be a lot better than my ‘73 CL450 which I was going to ride. I’d probably be ready to die after a few hundred miles.

No, I’m trying to fight my impulsiveness. I’m going to get my truck back up and running, then if I still have the itch I’ll search one out. I finally got the rear brake figured out on my CL450, so I’m going to get some knobby tires for it and do a camping trip to see how it does.

I put some knobbies on my bmw airhead because I was constantly taking it up in the mountains... It kind of sucked. It wasn’t a real offroad bike, no matter how I set up the suspension.. And on the highway it buzzed like a mofo... That’s why I bought my Gran Canyon.. I just realized that a true offroad bike fitted my lifestyle better.....

You’re CL is prob a bit better off road naturally.. but still.... you should at least go look at that GC.....!!
