Kinja'd!!!

For anyone curious, or anyone interested in owning the previous generation Maybach 57/62, here is a list of scheduled maintenance items and their approximate costs. Remember, these costs are approximate and can vary greatly from shop to shop. It doesn’t help that I took them straight from a quote I did about a year ago.

Brake fluid $770

Transmission fluid and filter service with new electrical connector $375

Coolant (main circuit) $190

Engine air filters $190

Spark plugs $1,100

Fuel filter $340

Belt and belt tensioner $550

Charcoal cabin filter $155

A or B service $200-600 (depending on which service is due and your shop’s pricing)

Kinja'd!!!

This is the list of scheduled replacement maintenance items. There is a further list of inspection, adjustment, and lubrication items that’s included in the base A/B services, so I didn’t feel it necessary to include here.

Also I had said it $10k for a 40k service. I was mistaken. The quote I was thinking of included some other repairs and maintenance. Such as tires at $2300 installed. These cars will need things that are not on the above list and those things will be expensive.

These cars have:

3 brake fluid reservoirs

6 brake calipers

2 SBC brake hydraulic units

2 AC compressors

A 385 amp water cooled alternator that costs $12,000-18,000

2 separate communication/entertainment systems

The complexity of these is ridiculous. Parts costs are absolutely insane. You thought a “normal” V12 Mercedes is crazy to own? We’re barely even scratching the surface with what you see here. Just imagine how many control modules will get fried when the alternator goes bad and sends over 20 volts throughout the vehicle. Just imagine how much each of those modules costs. Then triple whatever number you thought of and you might get close. A Maybach makes an S600 look like a Corolla.

I always wondered how bad of an idea a 60k Maybach would be, turns out it’d be a really bad idea.

Shattered dreams? Ha. I never cared for the Maybach; it’s the car the one-upper asshole would pick just because he wants to show up his friend who brought an S class by having one that is strictly better. There is a certain ‘look at me, I have money’ quality to expensive cars, but the Maybach is that and nothing else, in addition to being one of the most expensive badge engineering jobs to come out of the auto industry. That combo is aggressively irritating. Remember that guy from the Nissan ‘keeping up with the joneses’ commercial from a while back?

The Maybach is that prius guy in car form. Fuck him and fuck the Maybach too. I delight in the idea of someone Tavarish-ing their way into a Maybach to show everyone how much better they only to bite off way more than they can chew. Though I do kinda feel sorry for all those drug dealers out there who are going to lose their shirts keeping this car running.

Huge price quotes are made, almost never performed.

Very few limo services here use Maybach, even in the past. Our showroom still has the full Maybach build center. Not sure about other universal Mercedes floor plan stores. Being family owned, this place gets away with so much rule breaking lol.

I think the parts cost + labor to do a belt (and tensioner!) on my Benz would be something ~$160, assuming an hour of work or so. What baffles me is the AND TENSIONER, though. I’m coming up on needing a tensioner at ~400,000 miles - what kind of design malfeasance is going on on the Maybach to make it need one already?

Of course, the engine air filter cost is far crazier, percentage-wise than the belt, though the alternator is the most epic fail.

This pretty much sums up my views. Maybachs are only special as cars to be driven in, but they lack that special ridiculous insanity that comes from driving your own that comes with cars like Phantoms. Driving a Phantom, you’re John Lennon. Driving a Maybach, you’re just an asshole in an expensive S-Class.

I sheared a belt tensioner in my S600 and I think it was about $1000. The only reason I didn’t do it myself was the lack of space between the radiator and the motor. Would have been able to do it if I’d bought an S500...

I really do have to question the wisdom of this. I’m not an engineer, but...I mean, can’t you just put more pistons in one caliper? Or use a bigger rotor and bigger pistons?

Kinja'd!!! "RamblinRover Luxury-Yacht" (ramblininexile)
02/08/2017 at 10:16, STARS: 0

I guess if the access is so apocalyptically bad, they may figure that the tensioner (low fail rate item, maybe 2%?) is just barely high enough as a possibility for trouble that the difficulty getting to it dwarfs the costs, so just get it done while you’re in there.

I wonder if there’s a clever hack that you could do to make it possible - like, remove the transmission crossmember to let the power stick tilt back 1/2", loosen some of the radiator mounts, that kind of thing. Something so stupid that the parts book doesn’t contemplate it.

The grille on these always gave me a Daewoo vibe. Not a fitting tribute to the name.

The local Rolls-Royce dealer had a 57 in their used car area several months ago. When driving by, I of course veered over to it, as I had to take a look. 70K for a 12 year old ultimate W220? No thanks.

While I mostly agree with you on just about every point, I will counter that it isn’t as much of a badge engineering job as people think. It’s so far removed from anything else Mercedes has built, inside, outside, and underneath. It certainly isn’t 100% bespoke and is more parts bin than a lot of people realize, but I think calling it badge engineered is a bit dramatized.

I think they did my tensioner when they did the pump and the engine was in MSP. I know they did belts and my idler pulleys.

02/08/2017 at 10:31, STARS: 0

That one threw me for a loop the first time I saw it too. Access isn’t actually that bad. Labor time for a belt and tensioner is well under two hours.

My best guess is that the tensioner experiences increased load due to the extra compressor and massive alternator, so they feel it should be replaced regularly.

They are rad indeed, but once the prices dropped, at least here in Houston, many were unfortunately abused. Never fails some no name shop is calling us for price quotes and that terrifies the the shit out of me. Poor cars getting semi-prepped as cheap as possible at some random shop only to head on to a wholesale auction

Talk about price disparity in parts too. The air suspension components are absolutely insane. The compressor is $370, which is like whatever, sounds about right for an air compressor in any car. Then a singular strut is $3,400! That’s more than a tandem ABC pump costs! FOR A SINGLE STRUT!

Same thing at Feldmann. They have one or two new Maybachs floating around but the tech I usually talk to says that they rarely ever get any actual Maybachs in. My friend’s boss had a 62, but he died, and my uncle keeps a 62S at his hangar in Brainerd. I’ve only ever seen one, and that was my friends boss’s.

I mean, you could. but then you have another 1 off part. that was done probably to reuse a existing part.

also, you can only fit so much rotor behind a certain sized wheel.

Kinja'd!!! "PS9" (PS9)
02/10/2017 at 17:38, STARS: 0

I don’t buy any of that. Fewer bespoke parts to save on build costs is something to think about when you’re making a chevy or something, but this is a Maybach. It was $150k over what you’d pay for the most expensive non-pullman S class you could buy. It’s supposed to be better than the best sedan in the world. ALL OF IT should be bespoke.

Kinja'd!!!

We’ve got calipers out there that are half the circumference of the rotor, and I’m pretty sure daimler, a multi billion dollar organization that makes six figure cars for a living could easily create whatever kind of wheel they needed.

Kinja'd!!! "bob and john" (bobandjohn)
02/10/2017 at 17:41, STARS: 0

true, they can make w/e wheel they want.

now go and find tires for it. or try and get an aftermarket set of wheels.
