Kinja'd!!!

I will be flying to Houston to pick up my BIL’s WRX wagon to drive back to Oregon. He gave me a killer deal, along with a new gaming rig. (2 x 10 core Xeons and 192 GB of RAM, it’s a step up from my 6 year old 2 x 4 core Xeon and 64GB of RAM) I got a $100 ticket from Southwest so it made it cheaper than transport. It’s going to be an adventure as the WRX has 240k miles on it and piston slap when it’s cold. He knew I had a soft spot for it because I used to own a WRX wagon and used engines are plentiful here. Hopefully it will not end up as my very own Roadkill episode.

I tracked down a friend recently in the area and found out he was laid off in Nov. He’s going to make the trip back with me. We’re going to drive through Vegas because I have never been to Vegas, even though I used to live six hours from it.

Wish us luck

My favorite kind of boxer for your time.

Wait two, 10 core Xeons. What motherboard supports that?

If it’s just a “gaming rig”, nothing.

There’s plenty of dual LGA2011-3 boards out there, it’s probably using a C612 chipset.

Something like this: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z10PED8_WS/

That said, this is completely absurd for a gaming rig, and isn’t even the fastest way to go (sticking with the quad core consumer processors is faster). And, 16 GiB RAM is plenty for a gaming rig.

It’s a Dell Workstation. I would assume it’s an Intel board, but I have no idea.

Whatever he wants.

With that setup he could be running multiple VMs in the background even while gaming.

It’s free so I can’t complain, it’s a high end Dell workstation. It has 4 16x slots so I might end up making it a gaming virtualization server. Run separate video cards for my family of four and run laptops on docks at the desks. I have toyed with it on my current setup with 3 video cards and it works very well so far, but my current CPU’s are showing their age under certain situations. Teamviewer is working well as the remote desktop client.

I can run gaming VM’s in background for my wife and kids if I get enough video cards. I could probably set them up with a Raspberry Pi at their desks.

A minecraft server, a TF2 server, a web server, a file/media server....

It still has more RAM than my laptop, and last 3 phones have had in terms of total storage.

Good luck indeed. Careful in Vegas!

Absolutely off-topic, but related to the image and your love for boxer engines: ever heard of Polopolus Porsche engines...?

Good luck on the road trip home. If you’re in H-town for longer than just picking up the car, let me know and maybe we can grab a beer. Congrats on the car and nice free computer.
