Kinja'd!!!

Hello fellow Jalops and Oppos,

As some of you may know, Nimbus, My beloved vip inspired 1999 Acura 3.5RL was rear ended weeks ago. The verdict came in late last week, and nimbus will be totalled. Check is in the mail on its way to me. Im satisfied with the settlement and am thankful I kept all the receipts. It took a tweet and a well tagged Facebook status to get a fire lit under the butts of both my insurance company and the insurance company of the party that hit me.

This leaves me nearly car-less, save for the rental car which i still have about 2 or 3 weeks in. So i guess, next week it will be time to go car shopping.

My commute will be about 30 miles a day from home to work and back. I would like a car that’s great on the MPGs. I am also about 25 miles away from the notoriously hard to find parking in, San Francisco so a small car is where its at! My gf drives a 2015 TLX so if ever we need the bigger car, she’s got one. I also want a fun car that has great handling because there are some really nice mountain roads. If possible, and offered, I would like that car to be a manual, stick shift. I would also like it to at least have bluetooth, and if its hard to see out the back, a back up camera.

I would like to find a car between $10,000 and $15,000 that I can finance. I plan on using part or most of my settlement as a down payment and then pay off the car within a year.

Unfortunately, because she feels it unsafe and has had friends in terrible accidents while driving these cars, my gf said Miatas and S2000 are out =(

My mom has a Fiat 500 sport. Currently at the top of my list is a used Fiat 500 Abarth. Checks all the boxes. (One reason it’s pictured) I’m also thinking about Minis and even Honda Fit sports.

What other cars are out there in respect to my given criteria?

Thanks for the read and thanks in advance to your comments.

I love my Abarth, got it (used) two years ago when my Civic died and it currently has 51k miles on it with no issues. Hoping to start enhancing it this year once I get college paid off.

Having driven both an Abarth (My mom has one, so I drive it often) and several Mini Cooper S’s, I would go with the Abarth every time. They drive so much better, sound better, and are cheaper. They depreciated like stones, so you can pick up a 2014 or 2015 with like 10,000 miles on it for around $12,000. Don’t even consider a Honda Fit, they are appliances. The Abarth will put a smile on your face every single day. I enjoy driving it more than half the cars I have ever owned, all of which cost far more than an Abarth.

If you want to push the issue, the NC (3rd gen) Miata had greatly improved crash test scores over the NB and NA due to the fact that they finally gave the damn thing actual roll hoops.

Otherwise...500 Abarth is probably going to be just about the newest car you can get in that price range that’s still fun, they depreciate like hell. I kind of wanted one, but decided against it because of what I heard about both reliability and higway noise. Other than that, your price range is identical to mine the last time I bought a car, so I can tell you what I was interested in and test drove:

Civic SI: Specifically the 2012-15 one with the 2.4. Not as revvy as the 8th gen, but way more torque, and still a six speed with standard LSD. Sub-3000 lbs (at least the 2012-13s but the thing that pushed it over was the 18 inch wheels) I enjoyed the test drive, main reason I didn’t get the car was the one I tested had some awful bodywork and curbed wheels. Guess that’s why it was so cheap (13k for a 2 year old one at that point).

Nissan Juke: Actually lighter than the Civic in FWD form, fun but sloppy with a stick. Worth a test drive if you can find a manual, though I didn’t buy it because...

BMW 128i: I ended up paying 15.5k for a 2008 BMW 128i with 34,000 miles on it. Despite BMW’s reputation, the NA 6 is plenty reliable, especially if you snag a low mileage one. Expect there will still be potential for minor repairs and quirks (I had to replace my hood latch about 6 months in). It didn’t end up being as cheap, efficient, or practical as the other cars I tested. That said, I tested it, and kept grinning as I was driving. About 3 miles into the test drive, the thought that crossed my mind was “ah shit...I’m going to buy this car.”

Hey! Sorry to hear about the accident.

I can add some of my personal experience for 2 of the cars listed. I had a 2012 fiat 500 Abarth. It was a fun little car that made an awesome sound! I also currently have a 2011 Mini Cooper Clubman S which i purchased after the Abarth was involved in an accident and it seemed as tho something wasn’t right after repairs but I couldn’t pinpoint it and insurance wouldn’t work with me. (I was not at fault for the accident)

I definitely say to test drive them both! The Abarth was a blast on city streets and sounded awesome no matter the speed. On the highway it tends to feel like it has a slight wobble. I would say the biggest “cons” I felt with the car was 1. The clutch throw always seemed odd to me as it isn’t linear feeling, more of a abrupt rotation. This isn’t major but just something I noticed during ownership. 2. Seating position is very high up to make you feel safer by placing you closer to eye level with other vehicles on the road. Biggest problem with that is when you go into a corner you know you are higher up by the body roll that naturally occurs. Other than those I loved the car. It brought a smile to my face every trip to the grocery store and back.

The Mini for me is almost a completely different car. The fit and finish is nicer (BMW). The chassis has a nice rigidity to it that inspires confidence. The “cons” for this one would be 1. Maintenance, If you get the turbo model then look into carbon cleaning and High pressure fuel pumps and avoid anything older than 2011 due to timing chain guides failing and destroying engines. If you don’t feel the need for added horsepower than I would definitely say try a non “S” cooper. All the grip of an “S” without many maintenance issues. 2. The exhaust isn’t nearly as fun as the Abarth was, but that is fixable with aftermarket. 3. Getting rid of run flat tires if you have and can tolerate roadside assistance is almost a must as the sidewalls are too rigid and deteriorate ride quality and handing a bit. Also fixable tho the next time the car needs tires.

Overall the I am at a point in my life where there are days that I miss the Abarth but, the Mini is a better car for me. The Abarth was fun in a laughable kind of way, where the Mini is more grown up, if that makes sense.

As far as why I bought a clubman? The Abarth backseat is usable in a pinch and maybe just a tiny bit more but lacks a majority of a trunk so you end up leaving the back seats down to have a trunk. A regular Mini cooper doesn’t have a back seat because no matter where you put the drivers seats anyone riding in the back isn’t allowed to have legs. The clubman for me was the best option. It has a great cargo area in the back and the back seats have had 2 adults back there many times without complaints.

Overall I would say test drive and then go a week or two and figure out what fits you better. They were/have been great cars! I hope this gave you a little bit of the experience you seemed to be looking for. Any other questions if this wasn’t long enough already I would be glad to answer!

While the NC as a whole is obviously vastly improved in terms of crash safety over the first two generations, the stock hoops are somewhere in the middle of a typical (useless) style bar and a legit aftermarket bar in terms of safety. The tubing is thin, and the bars themselves are very short (an inch and a half shorter then they look, the actual metal bars are covered in useless plastic).

Buy the Abarth. Your smile will never leave.

If reliability and MPG weight more heavily in your scale, than a Fit sport would do. I’d bet you could even find a used 15 in your price range they have more power, due to direct injection, better fuel economy, and weight about 100lbs less! I really like driving my Wife’s 2010 Fit, its been worrry free from 38,000 or 62,000 miles. And I’d bet it would be really fun with a manual trans a a bit more power.

However I’d bet the Abarth provides even more smiles per gallon, when it’s not at the stealership.

What about a Genesis?

Genesis coupe? or sedan?

I am really avoiding buying another lux sedan, just because i really loved nimbus. It was a never ending project that came a long way and while i was satisfied at the point i reached, i still wanted to do some more to it if time and money permitted. A lot of cars out there are similar and more well equipped, but looks wise and even driving wise, nothing seems to have the same character as nimbus.

My gf has the new TLX and its a great car, im sure it will take some more time for it to grow on us, but it just doesnt have the street presence and rarity that the RL had.

call me crazy, but if i dont do a subcompact fun gas sipper, I might get a 3rd gen honda odyssey, a first gen refreshed MDX or a first gen TSX...

(im trying to avoid cars that i can easily modify. I feel that enough though the Odyseey and tsx can be modified, it will take more money and more time than say a ef/eg/ek/em/ep SI, a del slow, CRX, prelude, or miata)

Thanks for the advice! i need to test out one of the newer turbo minis.

My uncle has an 02 mini s. fun little car, but a bit stiff on the suspension side, not that i mind personally, but passengers can feel it, compared to my old 99 civic si, (which had stiff skunk coils that i had set to 2 inches lower than stock, mated to integra type r shocks, which are 2 inches shorter than stock civic shocks). Hes had a number of expensive issues with electrical and safety equipment on the car, had to replace the plastic radiator overflow tank with a 1 piece aluminium tank, because OEM is 2 piece plastic tank, and motor mounts dont seem to last long in the car, but its still in good condition even today.

My mom has a fiat 500 sport automatic. I taught her how to drive in it, so i got to use it a lot early in our lease. I even got to take up my fav windy mountain roads, so i know what you mean with the body roll. Im curious if there is a difference between the suspension of a sport vs a turbo or an abarth. Im also curious to see how the clutch and shifter feel on a turbo and an abarth. I know they now offer abarths in autos as well, so i might check one out just in case...

yea someone else mentioned that the NC was safer, but man if it isnt the ugliest miata of them all...

500 Abarth -what kind of reliability issues have you heard of, i havent had the time to join a forum and ask yet

Civic SI: Specifically the 2012-15 one with the 2.4. - My ex gf had one, blue coupe, Its got slave cylinder issues and causes the 2nd/4th/6th gears to wear prematurely. Lots of ham fisted shifters have had to have their transmissions replaced. Hers would grind going into second. Shes pretty much an expert manual driver too. Shes had nothing but manuals since being old enough to drive, and living in the heart of SF, you learn how to get good fast. We also noticed that the clutch would slip here and there, and on car under 2 to 3 years old, it was kind of odd, but i half expected a stock clutch not to be able to keep up. I would consider a 4 door, but i would be very tempted to mod it lol

Nissan Juke - juke R or nothing!!! lmfao, on a serious note, im not a fan of it.

BMW 128i- There are a lot of these for sale here in the bay area oddly, but no 135is. I would love a manual convertible! The engine may be solid, but what has always scared me about bmw is the other things like electrical and suspension issues like the e36. there are actually a lot of e46 M3s on the market in the price range too but im hesitant.

I love the look of the NC hardtop, arguably the most awkward-looking Miata ever made. I have weird aesthetics.

Most of the Abarth issues I’ve heard about have been build quality issues...the early ones had side skirts fall off, as an example. To be fair, that wouldn’t have stopped me, the highway noise/manners issue was way more important due to my penchant for 500 mile roadtrips. I still kind of want one, though.

I was looking at the 4-door Civics, didn’t know about the slave cylinder issues.

As for the BMW, the issues on the E82 (and the E90 for that matter) are relatively minor...the subframe issues that plagued the E36 and E46 have been mostly resolved, so suspension is pretty solid. Electrical...I mean, it’s a BMW. The big one for the 1-series is the body control modules, there are things like windows refusing to go all the way down and issues like that. The one endemic body issue is the third brake light...I actually have to fix mine soon. I can’t speak for iDrive, I very specifically bought a car without it, and I’m glad I did. The less fancy the car is, the fewer things there are to break.

the driver of the s2000 had his leg pinned in the car, door and dashboard area, nose went under a truck, but yea, sounds like he shouldnt have been driving a certain type of way.

the miata driver was a woman who became paralyzed from the waste down, i dont need the details of how that happened, ive driven miatas before. its pretty easy to imagine all the different ways

Here in the bay area, people dont know how to drive, and before i got rear ended i would average 2 to 3 close calls a day and i would have to use my horn at least 3 to 4 times a day so i can see her cause for concern. Ive personally been in 3 accidents when i was behind the wheel, and one were i was a passenger and none of them were my fault. each time ive been hit, and 2 of those 3 times were enough to total my car. 2 of the 4 accidents ive ever been in could have ended my life had i just entered the intersection a second sooner.

I still really want an s2000, or a NB miata, they just arent at the very top of my list. Top 10, but not top 3 lol. Prices on NBs are decent, but finding a clean title is still a bit of a chore, though not as hard as NAs. S2000s are hard to find unmodified for my price range... most of the best examples here in the bay area still go for $17k to $20+k, $10k to $15k examples have been modded or hold a salvage title, I would rather not take a risk on a salvage/modded s2000...

Yea the first generation BMW Mini’s had their issues. I assumed you would be looking at second generation if you were to purchase. Also yes they can be had for your price range. I bought my clubman ~2 years ago for 15K. So I am certain you could find a cooper s for less easily. I have not owned an automatic for a few years now so I can’t comment to the differences but whatever you feel works best for you on the day to day is what you should buy. Realistically most any car that is well taken care of and maintained will be in great condition years after it is purchased!

If i was going to look at getting another Fiat 500 I would have a long hard think about my plans for the car. If the intent was to just buy and drive and enjoy it stock then Abarth all day. With that said if I had any intention of modding anything like the suspension or putting a chip on the engine then I would look into the sports a bit more since I would most likely be changing out everything that makes an Abarth an Abarth. Plus the turbos have to be much cheaper to pick up than the Abarth just due to name alone. So if you do end up going the Fiat route figure out what your plans for the car are.

Either way I am sure whatever you buy you are in the right mindset for a smile every time you get behind the wheel!

What about a 3 door GTI?

Maintaining a BMW can be expensive, but RWD and a naturally aspirated inline-6 put the experience a cut above the cheaper ownership of hot hatches. I’d say Porsches take it further in both cost and experience. Test drive stuff and get whatever you love!

I think you’ll love it. One thing I would point out is that the 2015's got some nice upgrades over the prior years in the interior (Digital Gauges, etc.). I don’t know if that is something of value to you, but it is something to consider when comparing model years.

not a fan of the coupes, they look nice, but i guess there are too many running around my area that are tastelessly modified...

i wish it were that simple, but its the bay area, its not. there are a ton of stupid drivers here. A SHIT TON, and people think LA and NY are bad, they need to come visit the bay area during a storm at rush hour, its like everyone forgets how to drive the moment the road gets moist.

Yea, ive been looking at the differences and available mods for 500s.

anything short of an abarth i would be way too tempted to modify.

I feel like an abarth may just be the fiat equivalent of an integra type R, (i guess the turbo would be like a civic si) in the sense that you could mod it and buy parts for it that are more expensive than the parts for lower trim levels, but unless you really have the time and money to burn, you really dont need to modify it and that the abarth is going to be a lot more car than i am expecting.

Prices for mods are going to keep me in check lol, i think i will be accessorizing the car more than i will be doing engine, suspension, drivetrain or any other performance mods, except for really great tires and really great brake pads.

as far as the gen coupe, i see one a day, riced out... Havent seen one stock since the first year they came out. And like the CRZ, im not a fan of how the front end looks...

That’s a bummer I’ve wanted a Genesis since they came out, and I’d still like to own one. But most of the used ones I find are either Automatic, rices out or both.

i think those are the very reasons Im turned off by them, i wanted one when they first came out, as sort of the g35/37 fighter, but alas... rice, auto or both
