...Tell life where it can go shove it. Seriously people. I’ve seen some alarmingly depressing posts over the last few days and weeks. Not all political, mind you. Some were just coming from bad places.
I got truly awful news today. It kind of rocked my world. I felt bad for myself for a little while, but it’s time I get back on my feet. If you pity yourself, you’ve lost. You become your worst enemy. Pick yourself up, brush it off, and do it again. Try harder. Want it more. Work for it. Whether that’s a job, happiness, or making a relationship work, doesn’t matter.
Life is what you make it, folks. And you only get one. Don’t waste it moping.

But... mental health doesn’t work like that? It’s not as simple as “feel better”. You have to learn coping mechanisms to deal with things (it took me a year and a half of working with a social worker for me to figure it out). For some people, they actually need medication in order to get on with their lives. Telling people to stop being sad doesn’t do anything.

I don’t really mean mental health. You need a doctor in that case. Real help. I meant when life gives you lemons, that type of thing. I’m all too familiar with mental illness. Runs in the family. I mean when you get a bad hand. Something shit happens.

Fair, but once again, suppose you suffer from a mental illness and shit happens: that’s gonna be rough to get through unless you’re getting help.
As well, Oppo is a relatively close community. When shit hits the fan, it’s no surprise that people gripe about it here.

I’m talking about when you get dumped, you lose a job, etc. My mom has borderline personality disorder and severe depression. My grandpa had manic bipolar disorder. It’s not my intention to belittle mental illness.

Indeed. Bad stuff happens, sorry to hear about your awful news, whatever it is. What defines a person isn’t how they handle the easy things in life, but how they handle the difficult things.

Resilience is an underappreciated virtue...and yes, we also have a lot of work to do with actual solutions to mental illness and depression, I don’t discount that, but for those not dealing with that, we all could do with a little more resilience.
