What Two Things About Your Car Would You Change?

Pick just two things to change about your vehicles. For me, if this thing had a “Mute” button and actual engine braking then I would be annoyance free, completely. By the way, I currently have 96090 miles on the odo. Got it at the end of August 2015 with about 34,000 miles on it.

The WK2 has been the cheapest running and completely trouble free (though if I used cruise control the weird sequence to initiate it would be an issue). Of course reliability is why I bought a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 “4x2" (that’s the trick, plus that’s when you could get a 6-speed on the Laredo X with the V8).

I love when a strange plan comes together.

I just got my WRX, but I have answers to this question.

1. Tighten up the shifter. Too much slop in stock form. (Fixed with a Perrin shifter stop.)

2. It’s hard to drive slow because pushing the gas pedal down 20% turns into 80% throttle. Plus power drops off at the top end. A Cobb Accessport and OTS tune will fix that (just got delivered today!)

Not required, but since the BRZ and WRX use the same type of turn signal bulbs, I saved my LED bulbs from the BRZ and installed them in the WRX with a Diode Dynamics SmartTap flasher.

And I think I’m done. I pondered a Nameless Performance axle back like I had in my BRZ, but for daily driving I’m actually enjoying the relative silence. Am I getting old or something? :)

Not BMW’s fault that my car doesn’t have the option, but I’m missing my split folding seats. But what IS their fault is the damn timing chain which might grenade, and there is no recall on it.

As for the Solstice, the transmission gearing. I think either an extra gear or a less aggressive overdrive would make it actually useful at lower speeds and bring up the fuel economy a bit.

Dunno. I’m tossed up between these two combos:

- Less squeaking and an actual aux jack that isn’t an aftermarket POS that hisses on me and won’t work when I’ve got a CD in.

- More power, manual transmission.

I mean, it should be obvious... and yet...

Swap the EJ255 for a LS1 (or SBC, or old 5.0), and convert to RWD.

(Then I’d swap the seats out for something more comfortable, get better brakes, and swap out the wheels and tires for something better than stock BRZ wheels).

I really miss the instant torque of a V8 and the traction limits of RWD.

next is the suspension. spring/shocks are horrid. I’d like a Fe1 with struts up front and air in the back and all around independent rear suspension.

The transmission.

I will never, EVER get another car with a dry clutch DCT. Ever.

Kinja'd!!!

My car is one of millions subject to a recall on various parts of the transmission. I got the clutch replaced under the extended recall warranty last year. It’s still a giant piece of shit, especially when shifting at low speeds, such as in stop-and-go traffic.

The other thing I would change would be the door locks. I can lock/unlock all the doors by turning the key twice in the front driver’s side door, but I can’t do that on the front passenger door. I can only lock/unlock that door.

There’s also a door lock control inside the car itself, where all the stereo controls are. If I’ve shut off the car, locked the doors and then, say, forgot something inside, then I can use the key to unlock the front passenger door, press the interior button to re-lock the car, close the door again and go about my day knowing my car is safely locked.

You can see the button at the top of this photo:

Kinja'd!!!

HOWEVER , let’s say I’ve turned the car off, locked it and realized I’ve left something in it, so I unlock the driver door and grab whatever’s inside. Then I realize I’ve left something else in there, but I’m closest to the passenger side, so I unlock that door with the key to grab the rest of my stuff. At that point, I can no longer use the interior lock/unlock button to lock the vehicle. I have to go all the way back around to the driver’s side and lock the car by turning the key twice.

In other words, once I’ve turned the ignition off, if — at any point prior to turning the ignition back on again — I unlock/lock the car from the driver side door, but then need to access the inside a second time, I can no longer use the interior door lock/unlock button to secure the vehicle again. I can only lock it again by inserting the key into the driver door and turning it twice.

It’s a relatively small quirk, but it becomes VERY noticeable and annoying when the layout of your home/parking area is such that it’s a lot faster to access the passenger side than the driver side.

I’m not sure I could narow it down to just 2. My DD is a 2007 MDX, which ticked many of the boxes for what we needed at the time, but there are a few annoyances, not counting things that need to be fixed.

1. Auto-dimming side mirrors. The inside one dims, but if I’m being followed in traffic by a bro-dozer, those headlights can be blinding.

2. A2DP BT interface, or some sort of an Android car play interface. I want to be able to see the track names for what’s playing, and skip tracks from the steering wheel controls.

3. RDS. How can a 2007 car not have RDS built in?

4. Better speakers. And I know this can be fixed.

5. Carpeted door pockets. Anything hard left in any of the door pockets will start rolling around and making noise.

6. Even with the 3.7L (which from what I gather is the largest displacement engine Honda has ever made), I would like more power (you can never have enough) via a Supercharger (and the sound/whine to go along with), which doesn’t exist for this engine.

But really, other than this, I’m pretty happy with it as a DD. It’s a bit bland, but that’s ok for this purpose.
