Second go-round on the engine, but still quite impressive. I don’t care for 107s,  but they’re as strong as any other golden era Mercedes. These things reward correct maintenance like few other cars.

This guy wants to hit a million, bought it new.

Very nice. My only points of snobbery if I were to buy one like that would be that it needs the old painted-hubcap wheels and quasi-Eurobumpers, but if it’s been the way it is for thirty years it just doesn’t make sense to mess with it.

The US bumpers do ruin these things, and goddamn do I hate Bundt wheels. But the SLC’s always look wrong to me, the wheelbase and roofline are poorly matched, I think. If this guy crashed it, he might be convinced to do Euro stuff. He has a ‘64 E-type, also bought new, that was crashed and got a Lightweight-style bumperless nose decades ago.

Now that’s getting your money’s worth, even with these being very expensive when new.

Speaking of SLCs, I saw this ad years ago, and think the car is just about perfect:

http://www.murrayco.com/car_collection/1973_mercedes_450_slc.html

It brought a mere 6K at auction.

I mean, the Bundts are an iconic thing, but they leave me cold. I’m okay with the wheelbase/greenhouse look on the SLC to a point because it matches older formats, but it looks like the trunk should be longer with big overhang (‘50s CAR!!!) or like the roof should be further back and sloped more, into a higher trunk, with taller body overall (‘40s-early ‘50s Euro).(Unspeakably horrible MSPaint renderings follow:)

Wow, beautiful. I wish my friend’s mom would have bought one.

Is it bad that I would drive either of those? I think it’s the extra space between door and rear wheel, combined with the awkward greenhouse proportions and fake louver 1/4 windows that’s off to me. The SLC would make a hell of a ‘brake though...

That’s a screaming deal, I’d look past my opinions on the styling for that. The green interior!!

Yes, olive green interior, I just stare at it. That must have been the most chic car in Spokane when it was new. Really, the SLC was quite the thing to have in the 70s. 6K at the height of the recession for a thirsty old German sled at an auction in Idaho is believable, but it would be a good deal. I hope the car went to a preservationist.

It certainly deserves to be well kept, silver with Euro trim & hubcaps is about as good as they get. We had a gray-market W123 that used to come in years ago, it was a metallic peach orange color with that olive green interior & cloth seats, just about the most interesting combo I’ve seen.

It’s the best year, 1973 - small bumpers and no catalytic stuff to mess with. MB was fairly hip with period-correct colors back then - I have seen yellow and orange 123s too, and I recall a mint 300D non turbo that was kind of a cookie dough brown with a caramel interior. A red on black/checked cloth W116 280SE grey market car sticks in my head too - it was a manual.

Hahaha, A MILLION MILES? This is gonna be great! Isn’t he allowed, by now, to ditch those hideous bumpers???

That’d greatly improve it! He has an E-type that lost its front bumper after a crash decades ago, maybe if this one gets damaged...
