US News and World Report crunched the numbers and came up with a list of the top 100 cities in the US to live in . My home town, Austin, is No. 1, which is both a blessing and a curse. Here are the top 10. How did your town rank? Did it even make the list?

Austin, TX

Denver, CO

San Jose, CA

Washington, DC

Fayetteville, AR

Seattle, WA

Raleigh-Durham, NC

Boston, MA

Des Moines, IA

Salt Lake City, UT

Austin is a surprisingly liberal city.

I don’t live in Seattle, but it’s close enough.

Good to see IA represented in the top 10.

I’m surprised to see Oppo didn’t make the list. Mods, what do you have to say for yourselves?

Best Metropolitan AreasBest places.

Also, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia ahead of New York? I’ve lived in Philadelphia. The one thing living in Philadelphia has going for it is that it isn’t Pittsburgh. New York also has that same advantage, but also has the added advantage of not being awful in every other conceivable way.

Surprising? It’s an R&D university town, the so-called Live Music Capital of the World, and boasts a nude beach called Hippie Hollow. Travis County (home of Austin) has been an island of blue in a sea of red for many, many years.

My question: How is Miami on the list? I’ve been to Miami at least once a week since I moved to this country 16 years ago. I dont understand. HOW?!?!?!

(Maybe they’re referring to the suburbs, but they’re considered different cities.)

Also, Des Moines? Seriously? Have they ever even been there?

I only say surprising because Texas as a whole is sometimes considered the poster child for red states.

I was surprised to learn that Washington is very red east of the Cascades.

As a happy resident of SF, I really wonder how it gets a 5.6 on the blue scale or San Jose gets a 6.1 if (say) Seattle gets a 6.3.

Source: I just bought a home in SF. Ouch! (Look for my upcoming post: I bought a home with a hilariously small garage, what small car should I get to replace the M6 which can only be parked in the garage with a spotter.)

Always bunk, IMO. It favors college towns or big cities with few large suburbs, which allow the statistics to be skewed towards those places. However, more traditional and diverse cities tend to get bad rankings because they typically have “ blighted ” urban areas surrounded by pretty nice suburbs. That dilutes the rankings for those cities and MSAs substantially. But I can ’ t argue with Austin taking the top spot...but you always have to wonder what it would be like without UT and/or the state government there. It also never covers “ dealbreakers ” for people, such as singular issues or traits that a person might not like. Otherwise these places would already be overcrowded.

Outside of the metro centers, it is. Fort Worth turned red in 2016 for the first time in years. Houston is reliably blue. But when you get into the boonies, it’s Trump signs and Confederate flags (generally).

They also listed Fort Myers there, where I lived for a long time and can say with absolute certainty is the worst place I’ve ever been. If you just retired from GM or Ford and want to go someplace to pretend it’s still 1962 in the worst way, yeah, it’s great. Anything else? Lol, no.

You also have a lot of tech (also tied to academia), which is the same situation with Raleigh. There’s something to be said for college towns that actually have good jobs in town, though — that’s rare.

My current city of residence is Dallas, at #15, and I can understand it. There is a lot to like about this place. It’s the right size for a city, you can afford to live here, good stuff to do.

The city of my youth, Indianapolis, only ranks #55, which I think is very underrated. It came back from the 70s, when it was Naptown, to become a real destination. And the people are what make it a great place to live, real down-to earth, common-sense folk.

Just make sure your next car has the 360 degree cameras and full parking sensors and you should be fine. Or get a Tesla and you can walk it into the garage from outside the car.

The house I live in used to have very, very spacious 2-car tandem garage but half of it got turned into another bedroom (with an en suite) right before I moved in so now it’s a tight one-car garage. I’m putting in some wine fridges soon which aren’t going to help either. I put my X5 in there when I go on vacation and even though it’s tight I have no problems with it due to the sensors and 360 camera. The ol’ tennis-ball-on-a-string also works for a lot of people but with the cameras I don’t need that.

Luckily my area of the city has street parking; enough for 3 cars just from me including an LWB full-size sedan! I have been eyeing a few homes in lower pac heights/twin peaks/noe valley/Potrero hill that have 2 or even 3 car garages. They’re not even huge homes or anything, some just happen to have the garage space.  (The house I’m in was paid off by my parents a while ago so I could move. Closing costs and realtors in the city are crazy expensive though. It’s a total racket.) It’s either that or buy an investment property in the next year before interest rates get raised more.

You’ll probably have to rent a garage elsewhere to keep multiple cars, if you’re not doing so already.

We lived in Houston for a few years while was in grad school (Rice). Generally, we liked it. Sure, it was big, had bad traffic (that was 20 years ago), but it also had museums, concerts, restaurants, parks, etc. We lived in the Montrose neighborhood, the “gay” neighborhood that apartment locators warned us about. On the contrary, it was a fabulous, eclectic and welcoming neighborhood. We loved it. And it was very close to Rice and the Med Center, where my wife had her first job after we married. Most big cities have the good and the bad in equal measure.

Austin is liberal in a very certain and strange way. During the 60's and 70's lots of hippies moved into the area because, well frankly it’s a beautiful area. They started a trend that continues, but not really in the same manner. During the 80's and 90's it still was pretty liberal, but in the 2000's it began to shift to the California liberal/libertarian style of thinking.

Combine that with the fact that the city has never come to terms with its racist policies of the past and marginalization of minorities. It’s a group of mostly rich white people who are liberals. I’ve found Houston to be just as liberal, in some ways more so, and much much more diverse. We just have zero hills and it’s fucking humid as satan’s ball sack (Austin is pretty humid too, just not as bad).

For us, it’s just a nice place to live. We’re in the Round Rock school district, and we live in Travis County, though we have an Austin address. My dealings with the TC sheriff have always been positive, and I’m glad I don’t have to deal with APD. The flip side is that so many people ARE moving here. Construction of mega neighborhoods and mega apartment complexes is going like crazy. And the roads and city services simply can’t handle it.

Check Google first. It’s SH-30, and the toll will cost you (I think) $10-15 to take the whole thing from Georgetown to south of Austin. The speed limit is 80-85, though. Just watch out for the feral hogs. There is a sign on I-35 in Round Rock that estimates the time to SA on SH-30 vs. I-35. It is rarely faster on the toll road. They built it too far outside of town. It swings way too far to the east. I rarely drive on it.

The I-4 stretch really sucks, but the town itself is not that bad (last time I visited was maybe 7-8 years ago; I lived there in the 80s). It’s about as “anti-Florida” as you can get, which IMO is a good thing in many ways. It has hills, gardens, lakes, etc. Plus you’re under an hour to Orlando and Tampa, or 2 hours to the east coast, but without the crowds and costs of those places. If you don’t like the beach, you could definitely do worse. Cool little traditional downtown area that you hardly see anymore.

I generally think that’s true, but there’s a chicken & egg aspect: Larger cities and coastal attract more immigrants (both skilled and unskilled) in part because they are (a) in better proximity to overseas and (b) usually have a support structure of expats already there. An extreme and unusual example would be Somalis living in Minneapolis. To a degree, it’s good, but it can also breed differences and create pockets of isolation where people aren’t actually exchanging ideas and culture, but rather clinging to their own little pockets.

Only if people don’t bother to engage. Which is the problem. I live in DC and there are very much, “Central American” and “Ethiopian” pockets, among others. I can’t imagine what they’re basing these “value” scores on. DC where I grew up is #4 with a 7.4 score for value, and Madison where I live now is #18 with a 7.2 score for value. Yet in Madison you can buy a halfway decent house for $250-300k vs easily paying twice that much for a similar property in DC unless you go to a super far-out suburb. Some of the older/smaller houses in the neighborhood I grew up in a nice DC suburbs are 2000-ish sq ft and in the $650k range, easy. My folks’ place at 3400 sq ft was like $840k on its last tax assessment. Value, huh?

I rent a space at Keatley Detail on Harrison. Used to be an easy walk, now it’s a drive but I’ll still keep the spot.

I’m actually thinking the i8 won’t fit either. Less footprint than the M6GC, but the doors make it harder to park.

Nope. Been a fan all my life. I’m 50—I go back to the Bobby Hull and Phil Esposito days.

You have to understand why everyone hates the fans though... I mean just look at that.

I imagine you would have similar attendance figures with any team when they go through a dry spell of wins. Hell, in 2005 they were 14th in the Western Conference. The next year they were 4th.

In a non-original six market(arena only holds 17k for hockey). Worst years we’re still over 13k and that’s in a brand new markets bad year.

I know what you mean. My in laws live in an area that was the boonies when they moved there, now there’s a shopping center opening across the highway and a whole lot of traffic going out to Dripping Springs.

My mom used to live in Phoenix and then Green Valley. My biggest question about Phoenix is how it came about that, back when people were headed west, somebody said, “Hey! Let’s live here !”

Replacing the M6GC is a hard feat for what it truly is - but as for small ( read, tiny ) SF garages that is a tough proposition.

Any interest in the Alfa Romeo Giulia Q ? Looks awesome and sounds great. As for sheer width savings - Merc C63 AMG Wagon? A bit more svelte

You could say the same thing about most of the northern midwest. Pretty sure it was a combination of copper mining and mormon settling though.

Median home price and commute time are two big things for me after you factor in job market, decent schools, good culture/food and outdoor scene.

The first four listed there absolutely suck for work/life balance and home prices hah.

I think the short list right now is the following:

1. Alfa Giulia Q. But it doesn’t have any parking sensors according to the FCA configurator. Concerning.

2. C63s Sedan. Skinnier than the coupe.

3. E63 Wagon. Skinnier than the M6. Long. Not as skinny as 1 or 2.

4. GLA45. I don’t love this option, but it’s a better city car than anything I currently own. And I do live in the city. Buzzy on the highway.

I support option 1 and 3 for their character, which is really what needs to be replaced most. The GLA45, bleh. I would rather have a fully loaded Mini Cooper S (JCW even) as city car.

I take it you have ties to Iowa? Lifelong Davenport resident here (for those wondering, about 2 1/2 east of Des Moines, right on the IA/IL border).
