To be fair i destroy my oil filter every damn time. I have OCD which means I feel compelled to check the tightness of the oil filter repeatedly. This means that it’s always way too tight when I come to change it. Theres no space to even get a wrench on it, so now I just cut to the chase and stab it with a screwdriver which does the job.

Besides using old oil on the filter gasket (why?) and over tightening the hell out of said filter what else did I miss?

He took off the wrong things, maybe, wasn’t wearing gloves (old oil is BAD), and used a CHANNEL LOCKS to take off the filter, punctured it, stuck a SCREW DRIVER through it, BROKE THAT, and wasn’t wearing gloves.

First, not understanding what the sump filter things were. Then destroying the old filter trying to get it off with channel locks, then breaking a screw driver trying to get it off with that. Also having an extra washer in there for some reason. I’m not sure he was over-tightening the new filter though, he was correct in saying his hands were covered in oil and thus slippery. There was also some quarts vs. liters confusion I think, but at least he didn’t end up over-filling.

I think the oil on the filter gasket is one of those things you had to do on older cars, but isn’t necessary anymore. I was taught that way, but have done it without and it was fine. I still do it just because why not.

Most instructions I’ve seen say to put new oil on the gasket (he mentions this in the video, but uses old oil, presumably because it’s more convenient). I’ve never seen anything recommend skipping oiling the gasket, though I’ll admit I don’t see how it could be of much benefit.

Just because you can afford to buy a $120k for the price of a Camry, doesn’t mean you can maintain it.
Besides, oil filters should be put on with a torque wrench. Check manufacturer’s specs, set your torque wrench to that #, and done. This filter is in a super easy location anyways.

I’ve never seen a torque spec for an oil filter, unless its the cartridge type, and the spec if for the cover/cap/housing.

It’s @ the place referenced in the video. I dunno why you would go to the hassle of looking up detailed instructions on how to change the oil in your $120k car that you got for the price of a Camry, then just ignore them and do whatevs, but whatevs.

Engine blocks still get hot. You should put a coat of oil on any type of gasket like that.
