Yeah, I don’t know what’s going to happen to anyone who works in education. I see corporate downsizing in the future for companies who provide materials to schools.

Certainly, but my original point is that this is nothing new. Politicians have been making giant messes in the education system for decades. Just look at the cluster-fuck that was No Child Left Behind, and then Race to the Top.
In a backwards way, I’m hopeful. I’m hopeful because I know our system is robust and good, and can withstand political stupidity, just like it has done time and time again. The statistics about how bad our system is compared to other countries are wildly inaccurate. They’re inaccurate because we are the only country in the world that tests ALL of our students, not just the higher level ones who get “tracked” towards higher education.
Obviously there are terrible school districts in this country, but our public education system overall ... flawed as it obviously is ... is one of our society’s greatest achievements. It’s one that I’m proud to work in, and work hard every day to make better. I will put my family where my mouth is, so to speak, as my children will go to public school as well.

I’ve read enough to believe that Ms. DeVos has good intentions, but not much ability or training to do the job for which she has been chosen. There must have been a legion of other trained educators more capable.
Regardless, this selection will not doom public schools, I think, because the most important parts of good public education are accomplished at state and local levels. To anyone who really cares about public education: I urge you to run for your local school board, attend PTO meetings at your local school, or even just volunteer in the class room or run a bake sale or something. This is one of those areas when you can make a difference in children’s lives. The most important element in the success of a school, whether it be public, charter, parochial, is the involvement of the families that send their kids to it.

I know that there are also plenty of dedicated teachers out there that will keep pressing on regardless of what is thrown their way.
I just hope that this is not an extreme case; where the DOE is in such turmoil that it makes it very difficult for public school teachers to do their jobs. Constantly having to deal with new policies and relearning “the system” gets in the way of forward progress.

This is the third time American voters fell for trickle-down economics. You’d think its previous two huge failures would have taught them something, but no, thanks to their short attention spans, we’re about to get trickled-down upon again. The fact is that American voters are just plain stupid. It had been only been eight years since the Bush II administration fucked up literally everything they touched, yet even before the clean-up crew finished undoing the damage the voters decided to put the same gang of numbnuts in the driver’s seat again.
The public got too used to taking government for granted. That’ll change with this new crew of wreckers deliberately ruining everything. By the time that subhuman and his gang of Breitbart/Stormfront thugs get kicked out of the White House, the American people may once again appreciate the services government used to provide, e.g., the EPA, the public schools, the public roads, Social Security, FEMA, etc., etc..
Even as ignorant and lazy and thoughtless as the average voter is, he or she will miss all these vital public goods when they’re gone, and then they’ll elect the adults to restore them. The problem is, it will be slow and boring, and as soon as the immediate crisis is past the kleptocrats will dangle another noisy shiny show-biz jackass in front of those short-memory voters, and they’ll probably flock to him.
