[repost for night crew] Hey OPPO what are some cool spots to visit near London? I’m going in march there with my family. Can be car related or not.

Kinja'd!!!

The mclaren factory doesn’t do tours unless you buy a car from them :(

Anything from Goodwood to a good pub would be appreciated

Thanks for your help. Please don’t leave stuck on a walking tour of the Underground thx.

If you’re a history buff you should check out the Imperial War Museum and British Museum, both were highlights of our trip to London last Christmas.

Not Oppo-related, but from London’s central station you can take a 1-hour train ride to either Amesbury or Salisbury (It was years ago, I forgot which), then take a 15-minute bus trip to....

STONE HENGE!!! Seriously. Go see Stone Henge. Nothing does it justice until you see it in person. It is truly amazing (and aliens totally made it).

Seriously, it’s a great day trip. Beautiful country, and you might actually get a nice day if you’re going in March. I left my hostel at 10am and I was back around 6pm using the trains and buses.

Sweet. We’re spending a day out there, and I was worried that it was going to be a big tourist trap.

I’m a history kind of person, so I’m going to recommend the British Museum and Westminster Abbey. When you walk through the Abbey, you can almost feel the centuries in the air around you. It’s a unique place. The British Museum has the Rosetta Stone on display when you come in. That should tell you what you need to know about the awesomeness within those walls.

As for pubs, there are lots, some touristy, and some less so. There is this one place on Trafalgar Square, I think, called The Texas Embassy with a big lone star flag flown out front. It’s even more bombastic than anything I’ve seen in Texas since I’ve lived here. I had to admire the sheer ballsiness of the place, but I didn’t spend my limited time going in.

Considering I have 17 pubs within a mile radius of my home you certainly won’t be lacking for pubs.

As for tourist advice:

Get some Oyster cards for public transport.

DO NOT BUY FISH AND CHIPS IN CENTRAL LONDON. You’ll be massively overcharged.

Whilst a lot of our musuems are free some aren’t so make sure to check in advance.

Unless you want the novelty, don’t use black cabs they also massively overcharge.

Don’t attempt to speak in English just speak your localised version. We’ll understand no matter how broken it is.

Most importantly prepare to spend because even with Brexit, London is really bloody expensive.

Kinja'd!!!

Also we have old trains that run daily just south of London at the Bluebell Railway.

When in Central London prepare to see more exotic cars then you will probably see for the rest of your life.

Also prepare to see more teenagers vloging then you will for the rest of your life.

Don’t try to spark up random conversations, we really don’t like that but don’t be scared to ask for advice we love giving that out. Can you tell?

Imperial War Museum was much better pre-renovation IMO, they ruined their best space, going from this big open space full of cool stuff and light:

The British Museum is an awesome place though.

I can vouch for its worthiness, as I went there. Loads upon loads of early aviation period through nearly modern aircraft with a focus on WWII (but also a Concorde), entire airplane engines to look at, a bunch of older Vickers airliners outside, atmospheric test chambers, and cars, cars, cars.

I also recommend the RAF museum, but it can be tricky to find out how to get to and I didn’t have nearly as much fun there. Brooklands is quite literally next door to Mercedes Benz UK, as well, so if they do tours that should be a whole day taken up.

If I were going I would go to a Soccer game. They have Arsenal, Chelsea and loads of other premier league clubs there. I just think it would be cool to see another sporting culture compared to something in the US. Other than That I would try to go to the museums and follow what the locals do.

The British Museum and the National Gallery are both first class (prioritize the British Museum if you can only do one). They are both free as well. Over in Kensington are The Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, and the V&A (which is admittedly not to my taste). There are of course the standard sights in Westminster (Parliament, Westminster Abbey), which are worth doing. There are some other good art museums like the Tate Modern, Tate Britain, The Courtuald, etc. The Tower of London is a big attraction, but frankly it is very expensive, and you are really not missing much if you just check it out from the outside. If you are in to ships, HMS Belfast is across the Thames from the Tower of London, and you can also visit the Cutty Sark, and a replica of the Golden Hind (though if you are really into ships, find a day to go to Portsmouth and see Victory, Warrior, and the Mary Rose.) For views of the city, The Shard has an observation deck, and of course The Eye gets you up pretty high as well.

Seriously though, if you do nothing else, go to the British Museum, it has an astounding collection.

Definitely not a tourist trap- it really is a wonder to look at. I had a blast, I really hope you get a nice day when you’re out there. I was surprised at how few people were there on a warm September day, I got to just sit on the grass for a few hours, marvel at the rocks, and listen to the audio tour (which I highly recommend).

The best part is standing there and trying to wrap your head around the fact that 2/3 of each upright stone is actually underground as an anchor.

Theres a zonda cinque at the front of the queue in the picture above.

There’s a few dealerships within walking distance too: McLaren, Ferrari, Rolls Royce, Porsche, Bentley/Bugatti, Lamborghini (a little further out but still tube accessible) and last week a Mansory dealer opened.
Of an evening/night, Sloane street normally always has some people down it, to such a level that i stopped taking pictures of 458's because theres bloody hundreds of the things.

If you want some adivce on where to go, just ask.

It’s a bit of one, but it’s pretty good all the same. If you take a car, go see the Avebury stones too, it’s only a few miles away. Similar kind of thing but less spectacular, and much much quieter.

If going by train, it’s Waterloo -> Salisbury (which is also nice as a day-trip kind of place. Cathederal etc.), then a bus to it (Amesbury is the town nearest to it but there’s no train line there).

You were lucky, there was a few thousand people when I went last. If we didn’t have the heritage pass it would have been a 4 hour wait in line to pick up tickets.

Also I’m pretty sure there was only a handful of old people and myself not looking at Stonehenge via a selfie.

This is probably my favourite museum ever.. though if you’re going in early march you’ll miss some of their best tanks as they’ll be off getting ready for a new exhibit.
  http://www.tankmuseum.org/home

The closest train will get you a 30 minute walk away (along a wide tank bearing avenue), so depending on how young your family is I’d recommend hiring a car.

M first thought was Imperial War Museum, glad to see you are already going. However, I’ll throw this, there is more than one Imperial War Museum. The one in London is very much a Museum, and certainly worth visiting. However I really enjoy the Duxford Imperial War Museum. Not sure if the things they offer have changed it has been at least 12 years since I visited. However it is a working air field, mostly kept like an old airfield. they have working aircraft that put on air shows for you.

The best part I enjoyed was going into the hanger where they restore and maintain the aircraft.

If you have the money they have an old WWI biplane that gives aerial tours of the area. If you have a pilots license they will let you take the controls and actually log it into your flight book, that you flew the plane. One of the tours I most wanted to take you got the flight in the biplane in the morning. Afternoon tea in the control tower. And it was only on this tour all inclusive package, you got to select a tank and take it out for a drive in their tank testing area. I don’t recall how much that package cost... I just know I did not have the money.

Duxford is a ways out of London, between Cambridge and London, so getting there could be a bigger issue. However I would highly recommend it, it’s worth the effort.

God, that sounds TERRIBLE! I went back in the fall of ‘08. With only a few dozen people around on a nice September day, I truly was in awe.

Kinja'd!!!

I went between Christmas and New Years, so I guess one of the peak tourist times coupled with the shorter days meant everyone wanted to go at the same time.

It was more or less like that the whole way around.

Next time I’ll go in summer, and first thing in the morning.

Imperial War Museum, Science Museum (both free!) and if you have the time, take a journey down to Bovington Tank Museum. Also recommend having a look at JD Classics in Mayfair, they have a lot of nice classics in there. There’s usually nice cars hanging around Mayfair too, I once saw a Ferrari Daytona just sitting in the wild.
