Kinja'd!!!

While we have been poking fun at FCA for using the LX platform since 2005, Infiniti is still running the FM platform. That platform has been on sale since 2001! Now you probably think I’m going to point out the Infiniti QX50, QX70, and Nissan 370Z because they’re old. Nah, I want to point out that the Q50 and Q60 are built on this platform so we will see this keep going into next decade!

In my mind, between the enhanced version of this platform under the GT-R and the updates from under the Q50 hybrid, I see an all electric vehicle on this platform then I’m not sure why it would ever leave.

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how far ahead of the industry Nissan was at the beginning of this century?

Also, have you looked into a G Sedan? I think it is the answer to be honest...

Can we just take a moment to appreciate how far ahead of the industry Nissan was at the beginning of this century? shame Nissan for using a 16 year old platform and aging engines that have lead to nothing but reskins and more bloat.

Honestly, get it together Nissan/Infiniti. The Q60 coupe is hot though.

The platform isn’t aging if it’s kicking ass! Hey, when the 350Z came out it was a Porsche Boxster competitor and after all these years the 370Z is still competitor with the Camaro V6. Once the new one comes out (on the same platform) with the VR engine line then it will be 100% competitive against the new Supra. The platform is OP.

Sometimes I think about what might have been if I bought an FX50S instead of my 335xi. I like those things. Too bad they dropped the V8 option on the QX70.

Yeah but the LX platform is based on Mercedes platforms which can be dated back to the 90s (W220)

Nissan has the know how, they just need to execute and bring back fun cars. The interior on the new Maxima is actually great and someone was just talking about how the interior on the Murano is great but their platforms need weight reduction and can use some much needed improved handling and their exteriors need to be less bulbous.

Can we stop worrying about how far back a platform dates? They’re not cheese, they don’t get moldy.

no it isn’t. It’s descended from the LH with a “re-set” in the middle to bung in a Mercedes-style suspension.

Don’t think of the FWD cars. Look at GM’s RWD vehicles compared to the FWD ones. Same with Lexus, Cadillac, and even Hyundai. In fact there is a vast gap between FWD cars and RWD cars from many brands now. Ford and Mazda come to mind as being some of the few making RWD and FWD vehicles with the same enthusiasm levels.

This. If it’s still great then don’t throw it away!

I still always look at the first generation FX. It just hits all the right marks for me.

see, the thing is, letting architectures stagnate to the point where you have to throw them away and start anew consumes a ton of money and resources. and it’s what the domestics have done over and over again. Meanwhile, Honda and Toyota have been iterating and improving the same platforms for decades. They’ve grown in size and taken on new body styles, but you can easily trace the lineage of a 2017 Accord back.

Exactly if Ford and Mazda can make great to drive FWD vehicles then Nissan has no excuse. I’m not saying they should convert the Altima and Max to RWD but make them more engaging, get rid of the CVT or at least put a decent one in.

Think of the reasons why manufacturers build new platforms, it’s not because they have a cash surplus and need to find a way to blow it all before the next fiscal year.

Personally, I really don’t care how old a platform is, as long as the car still looks good, the interior doesn’t seem too cheap, and the car competently fulfills its intended purpose.

Sometimes, an old platform can be an advantage in terms of parts availability, reliability, and lower MSRPs.
