Problem one is that they’ve offered four engines since 2013.

A naturally aspirated 3.5 V6

The Ecopoop (Twin turbo) 3.5 V6 with 365 HP (AWD Standard)

A 3.7 V6 producing 305 HP (AWD

And the new 2.0 Ecopoop with 240 HP (FWD only)

One of the major reasons the CVPI worked so well was because of the simple, cheap and effective design of both the body and the engine. Ford has already face lifted the Explorer utility and probably going to be phasing out one engine (3.5 NA.) The CVPI was built to last years and Ford making major changes every couple years isn’t making it easy for the new Interceptors to live up to the void the CVPI left.

“pursuit-rated”

I hope this makes it onto a badge like the Jeep “Trail Rated” badges.

Counter-point: Ford really should have updated the power-plant of the CVPI along the way at least once or twice. The reason they didn’t is not because it was perfected, it was because they had no real competition. For crying out loud, the 2010 CVPI had less horsepower than a 1996 Capcrice 9C1.

The CVPI worked so well because it was damn near four decades old and the drivetrain was half that age. The 4.6L lump under the hood wheezed out 250hp by the time the CVPI was dumped into its grave, and it was slow as balls getting there.

The CVPI’s reputation for being cheap and reliable is because it’s hard to fuck up something as simple as the Flintstone Mobile, and parts aren’t expensive if you’ve been making them for over three decades.

The CVPI served its role well, albeit slowly. The new Interceptors can run circles around the old dog.

CVPI should have been a expedition. I still scratch my head that the exploder is fwd based and unibody. The crown vic and B body was liked for its frame on body rear drive set up.

The 4.6 sounded amazing though.

The new Interceptors are waaaaay better than the Crown Vics to drive. Hell, even the new 2.0t is faster than the old 4.6.

Most of the State Poopers I know prefer the newer cars and most of the local cops prefer the Crown Vics.

They should have thrown the 5.0 in there as the last hurrah.

The Lt1 Caprice was the king of cop cars though.

The thing is, like the public, the Police are in love with SUVs. Ford is selling lots of Explorer police units and don’t really care about the Taurus version too much anymore. The same can be said about the civilian versions. They build them on the same assembly line that is near maxed out production-wise. Ford has skewed the production to make more Explorers at the expense of Taurus as the Explorer is more profitable.

I think too much is made of frame vs. unibody. The Expedition is too expensive for most departments to outfit their whole department with them. Most departments around here use Tahoes for their watch commanders, K9s and such, and Explorers (or Taursuses or Chargers or old Crown Vics) for the rest.

Ford rested on their laurels way too long. The Crown Vic could have been updated a bit over the years. Other than the power plant, the doors needed a lot of work to pass new side impact standards, which is what ultimately hastened the discontinuation.

They could have done new doors at the same time they did the new front clip in 1998, but, instead, they carried over the ones from the ‘92 Grand Marquis. Alternatively, some sheet metal changes were still economically justifiable as late as 2003/2004 - they were still introducing new variants of the platform with the Marauder and showing off concept cars like the Marauder Convertible, so it was apparent that they still thought the chassis had some life left in it at the time.

And, would it have been so hard to update the powertrain? With that huge engine bay, just about anything could have gone in there. The EcoBoost V6 would have provided a nice increase in fuel economy and performance, and, alternatively, why not look at a 4-cylinder based hybrid system for the taxi trade?

I remember hearing a state trooper in a crown vic hit WOT next to me on the highway - the most viscous intake noise I’ve heard to date.

They sound beastly, if only the performance matched the sound they make.
