An average price hike of $5,000.00 for Mazda.

I posted something similar to this with a prior article but it applies here, too.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

My main fear is that smaller manufacturers may end up leaving the U.S. Take Mazda, for example. I own two of their recent products (and have a loan on one), so the company’s future here is of some interest to me.

Mazda is already a tiny automaker with tiny sales. They manufacture their cars in Japan, and more recently, Mexico. If Trump slaps tariffs on the Mexican-made cars, that will either force Mazda to raise the prices of those, or move all production back to Japan. I don’t think they have the R&D money to open a U.S. plant.

Producing and exporting here from Japan is already expensive, and will probably become even more so. If the budgets don’t make sense, I could see them giving up here in the USA – a la Suzuki in 2012.

Subaru, the other tiny Japan automaker, has it a bit better since they manufacturer some cars in Pence’s home state of Indiana.

Anyway, if I’m left with two orphan cars with zilch resale value and hard-to-find parts, I’m not going to be a happy camper.

Honda should buy Mazda.

There are a lot of if’s before 5 grand gets tacked onto new Mazdas.

I own a Saab, no resale and hard to find parts aren’t that big of a deal. You can always find parts and resale only matters if you don’t drive it into the ground.

The real trick is finding a good mechanic to do work on it.

Hard to say, but I wouldn’t worry too much about parts availability. With stuff like the Fiata around (A fiat marketed Mazda with Mopar lables on the windows), there are all sorts of channels to funnel parts through I’m sure.

Subaru and Mazda should team up. That would be a cool combination.

Definitely. If I had to replace my 6, I’d look long and hard at a Legacy.

Honestly, if Mazda closes up shop, we’ll be getting rid of ours hopefully before the depreciation hits too hard.

I’m surprised Toyota hasn’t tried to snap them up, honestly. There’s a hybrid Mazda3 in Japan that uses Prius tech and of course the Toyota Yaris iA (formerly the Scion iA) is a reskinned Mazda2.

My Mom recently got a 2017 Outback. It’s a nice car. My only complaint is that it is massive.

This entire policy is simply for show to appease his base. There is ZERO benefit to the US in doing this. Protectionist tariffs do not help local automakers, competition does.

Why did literally everyone go buy a Japanese car in the late 80's and the 90's? Because the US car companies did not have to compete prior to then and only sold us garbage; which we bought because we had no other option.

What happens once that artificial barrier is removed? Bam, everyone buys the better product and the US companies learn to adapt. No one can argue that Ford and GM are not better at building cars today because of their necessity to make cars that are actually competitive. FCA is an outlier, they are making some good vehicles, but are still struggling to fight back after their abusive relationship with Daimler. Prior to that horrid merger, they were the poster case for competition improving products.

Sadly, 45's base does not want to hear the complex variables that are really involved in global economics. They want short, simple answers that make them feel good. No one can bring back manufacturing jobs at the level we had in the 1950s and 60s. Unless we can travel back in time; which given the policies being put forward buy this idiot and his klepto-cabinet, they are trying their hardest to do just that.

Toyota needs to buy/invest heavily in Lotus. Lexus especially would benefit from some Lotus tuning and lightness.

Mazda and Subaru need to work together. That would keep the MX-5 and BRZ alive since Mazda could handle that work, and Subaru can focus on the Outback/SUV front.

They can both work on their mid-level sedans and hatchbacks.

No argument on the economic side of it. But Trump has already shown by his actions he is wiling to follow through on his campaign promises. Well with some modification to make them pretty much legal. I certainly hope you are right, but so far he’s been a mixed bag, and I certainly would not make any predictions.

The depreciation happens overnight when an automaker announces they’re closing up shop. Source: owned an Oldsmobile in 2001.

So you think that corporations are going to undo 50 years of automation and therefore cost savings in order to hire millions more people who they will then have to pay?

The US does not nor can it return to building everything our population wants here. The costs both in terms of how much, much more expensive items would be and to our environment are far more than we are willing to pay.

Thus far *45 has been wrong about everything, except dropping the TPP. But even then, I disagree on his reasoning behind that move. We should have trade agreements with Asia. Just without all the draconian IP/Copyright measures the MPAA/RIAA wanted to foist upon those nations.

Not sure where you get from A to Z there. Your apparently reading paragraphs I never even wrote.

It does not matter what I think, or what you think, or even what corporations think, all that matters is what the government says. Again your right on the economics at least within the limits of this discussion. But what does the economics have to do with what the rules are that the Mobsters in charge make. If they impose import tariffs, then corporations must adjust or face the mafia ’ s thugs, regardless of what you I or the companies may think. Although the smugglers and blackmarkets will love it.

All I have said, and don ’ t read anything more into this than what is written, is that Trump has so far been following through on his campaign promises, so I have no basis upon which to speculate that he will not follow through on the promise to impose Tariffs on imports.

Regardless of what Cheetolini has to say about it, corporations are never going to reverse the gains to their profits by undoing automation, thus we are not going to “bring back all those jobs.”

For one thing, I don’t think Mazda is going anywhere. For another, if you like the car and it’s treating you well, then it doesn’t really matter. Just pay it off and keep driving it. I’m going on year 11 with my truck. I’ll replace it if it becomes a money pit or if the rust ever got so bad it became unsafe. Otherwise, I’m just gonna keep driving it.
