So, a couple things.
1, I grew up in NJ and I know your pain.
2, Michigan doesn’t have a DMV, we have the Secretary of State (literally the same thing) but we have a new system. I “get in-line” at my desk at work with the app. It told me I had a 45 minute wait and to make sure I showed up a bit in advance of that in case things moved quicker. I showed up after 43 minutes. Sat down thinking “no way will it be on time”. about 45 seconds later I was called up to the window.
Thank god I never have to go through the “old way” again.

How many people have had pointless arguments with the clerks, while you’ve been there?
I worked at a marina where we processed boat registrations on behalf of the DMV, so I got a glimpse of the life of a DMV clerk, with people coming in totally unprepared to handle a simple transaction, governed by rules that no one in the room has any control over. My favorite was when, after a 10+ year hiatus on fee increases, they finally did an overhaul and people had to pay a little more. You’d think I asked them to give me one of their internal organs. Call your legislature, I’m sure that boat owners paying an additional $20 is high on their list of problems to be solved.
