3 Audis for your time.

Kinja'd!!!

On various FB Groups & on forums people always mention 55 plate, 68 plate, etc. I know it as has to do with insurance, but what does that mean?

The UK licence plates have an age identifier which shows when the vehicle was first registered.

Not from Britain, but it’s to do with their registration numbers which change twice yearly. You can tell the age of a vehicle from its number and cars are often sold by their number as well as year.

It was great, so many good cars. I want to go down this year on the 20th. I have a day off work, it will be quieter (yay monday), and less crowds to see the good cars.

Just a quick way of telling the age of a car. There is a myth that older cars are more expensive to insure. In reality when it comes to insurance, it is very much on a car by car basis.

It means the year of the car, which is shown on the number plate.

We used to use ‘regs’ (letters) to determine the age, then we ran out of letters so we have this new number system.

So now, the car’s year is displayed by the numbers on the plate.

For example 02 = 2002, 11 = 2011 and 05 = 2005 etc.

But for cars made in the second half of the year, you add 5 to the first digit.

For example 51 = second half of 2001, 67 = second half of 2017 and 58 = second half of 2008.

Kinja'd!!!

So that means this Suzuki Celery was made in the second half of 2014.

Kinja'd!!!

While this rather lovely Alfa Romeo Brera was made in the first half of 2008.

You should get the idea. With this you can identify the model year of any car just by looking at the number plate. That means your 55 plate is a from the second half of 2005 and your 68 plate is from the second half of 2018.

And how about the old stuff? For cars made before the second half of 2001, just look at the first letter on the plate (the further down the alphabet it is, the newer the car). For cars made before 1983, the letter will be at the end of the plate instead.

Hope this helps~

Now have a go identifying these three yourself.

Corvettes are cheaper (or the same price) to insure then a Civic.

British number plates changed back in 2001 after the old suffix (ABC123D) and prefix (A123BCD) plates ran out.

The new/current (AB12CDE) system has Local Memory tags/Regional Identifiers.

The first letter denotes the county and the second letter denotes the office/sub office it was registered at.

Kinja'd!!!

Following the two letters are two numbers that identify the age and what year the vehicle was registered in, 51 = latter half of 2001, 64 = latter half of 2014, 08 = early half of 2008.

Kinja'd!!!

The remaining three letters are random as the latter three letters are allotted to dealerships on a first come basis, you can as we did with the first Superb, choose from the list what letters you want from the availability otherwise the dealership will put random ones one.

Car ages are a factor not in that the cars tend to be cheaper as they get older and insurance will vary but depending on the year of registration will vary the tax band as the tax band on emissions for a while changed every few years so while a 12 year old Vauxhall Zafira mpv will be cheap to buy and insure, the cost on emissions will be quite high.
