...that a Beetle once went 183mph, driven by a rocket turbine.

And yet, I’m going to have to give the MASSIVE NUTZ prize to Roy Drew. Dragger wheel + turbonique axle + cage(?) + otherwise stock Bug + basically no control over speed. Oh, right, and it was A FUCKING ROCKET

Well now that Kenny Loggins song is stuck in my head.

This should be the new “speed” post. Instead of blackbird, insert black widow.

Crazy to think how much work went into only to roll. Now you can buy a used ZL1 and do that speed I’m assuming regularly / reliably.

Well, the CPI value of $36k today in 1966bux is $4800. Given the ‘66 Bug MSRP of just under $1600, a Turbonique axle costing around $3600... the conclusion I draw is that it was shockingly cheap in 1966 to do things that were (no pun intended) bugfuck insane.

Lol, it was shockingly cheap to hit that speed once .

Hey, if you count practice runs and the exhibition race against Tommy Ivo’s Showboat, he hit in excess of 160 at least a handful of times. So, 160 sort of reliably, 180 less so.

Not in a quarter of a mile, you couldn’t.
183 MPH before the 1/4 mile traps in a Beetle is, as RamblinRover puts it, bugfuck insane .

The front page tried to put together an article a while back, but it turns out information on Mr. Pitiful and the Black Widow is scant at best. Sadly.

Yeah I Googled his name after seeing this, nothing on Roy. One of the top results was some KC forum post asking if anyone knew about him. If the man’s still alive, I want to buy him a beer.
The google search did lead to these though:
Sweet shit, the drag axle was cool/diabolical.

My favorite Turbonique abomination is the Tobacco King Galaxie. ‘64 Galaxie fastback done up by an R.J. Reynolds tobacco heir, who (get this) kept the interior intact, and had a Turbonique axle *AND* a blown four-carb 427.

Let’s be frank, though. If you’re getting in a 160mph+ basically unimproved Bug more than once, something about the fear instinct is flat-out busted. I’m betting on “felt no fear, because crazy”.

That car came up for auction not too long ago, didn’t it? I distinctly remember my head exploding when I learned about that one.

Yep, sold at auction a while back. Such a great car. “Sure, install the turbonique axle and gasser lift on the front suspension, but it needs to have the full black 500xl premium vinyl in place - I’m not a savage. Oh, and make sure all the rocket axle and supercharger gauges match the interior.”
