First thought as someone who has driven in Philadelphia for years: “That’s a surprisingly cautious taxi driver.”

Correct, but still an asshole.

Right? He must be new at this.

I lived about half an hour from Philly for almost 4 years. They’re in the top 3 of cray Taxi drivers with NYC and Sicily.

True. But in Philadelphia, he’d have cut that car off and then brake checked him just for good measure.

I was watching old-new Top Gear yesterday and Stephen Fry was talking about how the benefit of driving a black cab in London was that other cabs would let him into traffic. Philadelphia cab drivers are the polar opposite. When I was driving my Town Car in Philly, they would routinely aggressively cut me off and brake check me, and I’m positive it’s because they would think it was a gypsy cab.

Co-Op patented a lot of those moves. You should see their other famous one, making a U-turn on Bay Street and blocking all oncoming traffic with no warning.

Oddly, I never really had an issue with cab drivers when I lived in New York. I mean, there’d be the random guy who’d pull shit about his credit card machine being broken or someone who would do 60 up Park in the early morning, but I’ve never encountered problems like Philly.

I’ve been in a cab where the driver stopped dead in the middle of the street blocking traffic to shout “I fucking kill you mother fucker you fucker you fucker” because another cab wouldn’t let him in.

I once had to threaten to call the police on a cab driver at 30th Street who insisted that his card reader didn’t work and that I had to go withdrawal cash (while confidently leaving the meter running, a favorite trick of theirs).

I could always tell how good of a mood I was in by whether I asked if they took credit (as they’re legally required) before I got in the cab, because when I was in a bad mood, I knew I’d get to have a fight if I didn’t say anything first.

I’ve seen the “Co-Op on Queen” but not the “Co-Op on Bay”.

I’ve seen cabbies come to blows with people in Manhattan. Saw one instance where a cabbie and another guy were in a standoff involving blunt objects with a traffic cop 100 yards away who was so busy with another issue it went totally unnoticed by her.

In Sicily, I can.e the closest to death in a vehicle I’ve ever felt. The cab was an old mini (maybe early 80s vintage in 1998).

I guess that police can’t stop everyone who drives on the sidewalk there, lol!

At least the driver used an indicator.

He might as well have blinked vaguely in my general direction though. Things to remember about wide-angle dashcams:

1. Its point of view is about 18" ahead of mine and 6" higher.

2. It has no A-pillars blocking the view.

3. Wide-angle makes distances look bigger than they are. Combine that with the other points and you realize that there was very little space and notice.

Besides that the right lane actually exits, so seeing signals wouldn’t be surprising anyways. In other words, in this spot the signal was less than useless. By the time he started coming across my lane I was very close.

Essentially the indicator served no purpose than to let you know he was intentionally cutting you off rather than accidentally drifting across your lane.

And not even that until the last second.
