On a scale of "Honey no buying cheese this month" to "Honey forget about paying the mortgage", how bad an idea is this?

I’ll fix it. “Hey, you won’t be getting the child support payment this month. The BMW needed an oil change.”

Those are my favourite wheels for the E63, that one looks really great.

Those have the N62B48, which is not the best V8 BMW ever made. It’s complex, but it’s not as bad as the hot vee turbo V8s. Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me can chime in, once the BMW engines go from M to N, I stop knowing much.

From what my BMW tech friends have told me these are terrible cars that make a 220 V12 S-class look reliable. Apparently the engines in these eat valve guides and seals and smoke like crazy from all the oil they consume. They also leak from everywhere. And something about ticking a lot? They made it sound like the valve guide problem affects pretty much every single one of these at a certain age. Apparently they’re still much better than the newer turbo engines.

Truth be told: this is “Honey, we are going to have to sell your wedding ring” territory. Possibly. Likely after the first ridiculous repair.

If it was a 635/640i with a six cylinder, then maybe. If you have any valuation of money, you won’t buy a V8 powered BMW.

The valve lifters are also ridiculous on these. Same problem as with the N52 six, where they can slowly lose captured oil back to the sump, so the lifters are almost dry. But it takes running the engine fast to get oil back up to them and quiet them down.

And if you don’t run to redline with any kind of regularity, God help you when you get deposits on the oil lines to the lifters.

At one point, the stated warranty fix (assuming you complained enough to the regional rep that ticking lifters shouldn’t happen on a BMW, even if they are declared “normal operation”) was complete replacement of the head.

Oh and they did make some design tweaks to the replacement heads (at least on the N52).

Beautiful car! in beautiful shape *plus* that magic 3rd pedal, not the Curse of the SMG

You don’t mind wrenching, right? (to the extent possible on a modern BMW; and assuming no major overhauls lol — I know of N62's approaching 100K miles with just routine maintenance)

*if* it has full maintenance records offer the equivalent of USD $8700

...If you don’t, I might have to! (jk)

I know, I know, V12 luxury coupe depreciation is a well-documented phenomenon. But still. $10k!? This is pushing $100k new, I’m sure. That’s apocalyptic depreciation. I spent about $10k on my 3-series wagon, and it’s been a great car for the money, but then it’s got a proven N/A I6 instead of this monster V12. And it was probably $35k new?

Imagine the looks I’d get dropping off my kids in this thing, instead of the wagon which has been mistaken by different people to be both a Subaru and a VW jetta. I mean, not exactly car people you might say, but still.
